Karoo National Park

Description

The Karoo National Park, founded in 1979, is a wildlife reserve in the Great Karoo area of the Western Cape, South Africa near Beaufort West. This semi-desert area covers an area of. The Nuweveld portion of the Great Escarpment runs through the Park. It is therefore partly in the Lower Karoo, at about 850 m above sea level, and partly in the Upper Karoo at over 1300 m altitude. There are two main game viewing drives that do not require a four-wheel drive vehicle: the one to the east remains on the “Lammertjiesleegte” plains of the Lower Karoo; the other is the 49 km long circular route to the west which ascends the Klipspringer Pass on to the plateau (Upper Karoo), and eventually returns to the plains at the "Doornhoek" picnic site at the western extremity of the loop. From there it follows a south-easterly course across the plains to the beginning of the Klipspringer Pass, near the camp site and chalets. At the top of the Klipspringer Pass the Rooivalle View Point presents a magnificent panorama of the Lower Karoo. The middle portion of the park, to the west of the Klipspringer Pass circular route, is easily accessible in 4x4 vehicles, and covers an extensive area, with rewarding game viewing opportunities. The Karoo National Park is a sanctuary for herds of springbok, gemsbok (or Oryx), Cape mountain zebra, buffalo, red hartebeest, black rhinoceros, eland, kudu, klipspringer, bat-eared foxes, black-backed jackal, ostriches, and, since fairly recently, lions. It also has the greatest number of tortoise species of any park in the world - five in total. The endangered riverine rabbit has been successfully resettled here. A large number of Verreaux's eagles have nests on the cliffs of the Escarpment. Martial eagles, booted eagles and the shy Cape eagle-owl are other raptors that can be seen in the Park. A wide variety of smaller birds occur in abundance, making the Park a birder’s paradise. The park has also been populated with Rau Quagga which are Plains or Burchell's zebras that have been back-bred to resemble the quaggas that roamed the karoo in great profusion until the middle of the 1800s, when they were hunted to extinction. The last quagga died in Amsterdam Zoo on 12 August 1883.

We spent 4 days in the park and did something different everyday. Kids had a ball playing in the pool. You could see some of the animals from the cottages. Our guide Jan gave us an amazing safari drive. Overall everyone was super friendly. The breakfast was the only underwhelming thing but the staff in the restaurant where great. Loved the idea of the picnic spot and second pool being part of the self drive safari.
Amazing scenery! Breathtaking views. Rooms are clean. Kitchen equipped with microwave oven, fridge, kettle, crockery and cutlery. Lovely gift shop. Friendly personnel. Only criticism is the restaurant's poor tasting and poorly presented food. Service is also not the best.
Wow what an experience! The staff were friendly and welcoming from the entry point. We enjoyed our experience. Excellent facilities and the discounted rate for SA nationals was a plus.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNot sure
You not going to find the big 5 here but it's still an interesting park for avid wildlife lovers The park has 2 main routes, 1 pretty flat and the other through the mountains. The route closer to the gate takes about 45mins to drive on mostly tarred roads and the other route about 2.5hrs , obviously depending on game you see. Some views on longer route are spectacular. There are a few viewing points 1 can exit We were fortunate enough to see 2 lionesses on the shorter route. We were told there are 14 lions Also saw eland , zebra , red hartebeest, ostriches, kudu and the highlight the bat eared foxes we saw on 2 drives on the longer route The roads are generally in good condition and can be driven with any vehicle. There is also a fossil area with some really well preserved fossils There is a shop and restaurant at the reception building and accommodation which seemed to have amazing views
Beautiful park. We stayed at Olive Grove Guest farm which was amazing as well. We did the 45km loop and saw some amazing game!?
Beautiful surroundings, many animals to see, great service, amazing venison potjie!Wait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNot sure
Loved our stay here. The view was spectacular. The cottage was cute and cosy. The restaurant staff are so friendly, I just wish the food was a tad better. Reception staff are a bit slow and not friendly at all. All in all not a bad stay at all.
This is a beautiful park! The family cottage has 2 separate bedrooms, each with its own bathroom. The bedrooms have air-conditioning as well. This park operates at an optimal level. They ensure that the restaurant stays in business by including breakfast in the booking. The food was delicious and packed with flavour. A variety to choose from as well. We went for dinner one night, and the venison curry and Karoo potjie were delicious! Most of the roads are 4x4 by we took the risk only with a high clearance vehicle and it was fine. The pool ensured a nice cool off after a drive. The nights are quite cool and during the day, it is hot. Each cottage has a nice stoep where you can enjoy the incredible view. This park is one of my top favourites of all SANparks!
Always excellent, best service of all the National Parks and our favourite place to stay.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedYes
Such a clean, and neat campsite. R Some roads are very corrugated and not maintained; small vehicles might have an unpleasant ride. There is a scenic 4x4 route I loved, and I think the best time to visit is in the winter.
