How Little Stream Came About?

The connection between Muriel Jones and Cape Town YMCA

Muriel Jones (1890–1974) was a South-African philanthropist.

She was born in Newport (Wales). In Cape Town, she became a member of the National Council of Women of South Africa and was elected Life Vice President in 1963. She danced with the University of Cape Town (UCT) Ballet, with whom she took a tour to Rhodesia in 1956. She was involved with many charitable activities. Among other things, she was an early activist for enhancing the living conditions in Cape Town slums. In 1939 she was portrayed as thinking about the three basic problems in the slums: juvenile delinquency, intemperance and marijuana. She was active in rising the housing standard in the slums. After the Second World War, she corresponded with The Emergency Committee of Atomic Scientists in Post-War America. During a visit to the United States in 1945, in an interview referencing wine, drunkenness and land prices in South Africa she was described as: 'a charming personality and delightful conversationalist' Lodi News Sentinel, 7 December 1945. She was married to Harold Higgs Jones (1888-1968).

At her death she left a house to the Young Men's Christian Association, that is now the Little Stream Conference Centre in Cape Town.

When Mr and Mrs Jones bought Little Streams it was completely undeveloped land. Mrs Jones, in her indefatigable fashion, set about radical transformation, creating terraces and paths, dredging the muddy little stream below the house, putting in trees which were already nearly full-grown! Nobody could not believe her courage in doing all of this. Her vision was unshakeable. Her energy seemed endless. They had no children, so of course she had the time. They were well-off, so they had the money. All the same, she stayed with her vision of what this place could be and she made it happen.

I have been to a lot of places in the South of the Cape, as this is my home town, but if you want an incredibly affordable and tasty Breakfast, with views for days and wonderful service --- this is a winning spot. It is absolutely heaven! There is nothing not to love. Do not have a privileged expectation... You need come here to chill, take in the nature and soak in the vibe. The food and service are the hollandaise on top of a fine morning!
This is tranquil place with a huge huge green garden, a paradise for kids just outside the city centre. No sounds of cars or the hustle of the city, just fresh air and singing birds. The restaurant staff are efficient and professional, the food is freshly made and quite delicious, we had a lovely breakfast. Will definitely call again.
Love this very special place! The food is delicious, affordable and memorable. Tea and scones a must! But the gardens are really eccentric! We spent an hour walking around the garden after lunch! Great surprises, perfect for children to run and enjoy! Loved it! We will be back!
Beautiful location in forest in Constantia. Amazing chocolate milkshake. Service was very good. Stunning garden.
Pretty garden. Super slow service. Not sure about the food, after 75 minutes of waiting I canceled my food order and left. Also not sure what's with their almond milk, but the coffee had sediments, looked like someone deeped cookies in it.
Beautiful, tranquil outdoor setting. The place is best described as rustic and could do with some upkeep and rejuvenation. Service was friendly but somewhat inattentive. We enjoyed the Sunday roast and the food's preparation made going there totally worthwhile. Supporting the YMCA too is good enough reason to go.Food: 5/5
The garden is so stunning. It’s like a secret, private garden which is so tranquil and beautiful.
It was raining and loadshedding. Not very busy but staff were still very friendly. Mains and dessert were delicious.Food: 5/5
The venue is so beautiful and serene, lovely to take a walk through, however the staff of the restaurant are extremely rude and unprofessional. From the minute we arrived, we were told to hurry up with ordering as they wanted to close the kitchen and cash up soon. We were confused because we had a reservation, so why accept a reservation if you wanted to close early ? When we mentioned this, our waitress was very abrupt and during the rest of our stay kept rushing us to get done. She also got our order wrong, probably too much in a rush to get us out of there. Wouldn’t recommend the restaurant but the garden itself is stunning.
Decided to celebrate a birthday lunch here, with friends. Heads up - there is NO liquor license for this venue. So you will need to bring your own alcohol. They do not charge corkage, BUT they charge you for using their glasses and they also charge for ice. Food: The food was great! Service: Very much lacking on the day - no attention to detail, we had to constantly look for our waiter - who never introduced himself. Also, they did not tell us about the braai they were having on the day - so if you dont ask, you wont know. Atmosphere: always pleasant. Sadly, their iconic carrot cake is not longer as good as it used to be.
