New York Bagels Cape Town

About

Traditional hand-made, boiled (obviously!) bagels. Fresh baked all day. Brilliant fillings. Cheesecake. Hot Beef on Rye. Great coffee. Now in Harrington St

Description

Started in 1940 by Simon & Judith Milner, grandparents of current owner Bernard Milner, New York Bagels began it’s life as Milly's in Gardens, Cape Town. Their son, Leslie, continued and expanded the business to five stores and a production factory specializing in frozen foods & pickled cucumbers.

After selling Milly's, Les and his wife Dot bought a wholesale Bagelry in London called New York Bagels, baking traditional bagels and supplying prominent stores such as Harrods and Waitrose.

On returning to Cape Town in 1990, Les, Dot & Bernard started New York Bagels in Sea Point, a Bakery and Deli specializing in Bagels. In 1997 the business expanded to include a 250-seat Sit-Down Deli.

In 2009 Les passed away. Bernard & his partner Wilma continue to run New York Bagels. In 2012 Nina, their daughter, helped spread the family brand to the Old Biscuit Mill in Woodstock, thus becoming the fourth generation of Milner in the bagel business. Long live the Bagel!

Ain't been to New York,USA, yet.. but if the bagel I enjoyed here is anything to go by, then I better get there, sooner rather than later. Seriously, I was very impressed with the super fresh Bagel, loads of filling!! Salmon, Cream Cheese...yumm! And as it was close to Pesach and the Cheesecakes were piling up, I had to have a slice. It was good, I prefer a slightly creamier/lighter texture, but flavour was spot-on. Nothing better to start the day than with Cheesecake!! The coffee was okay. I thoroughly enjoyed the vibrant early morning vibe!!
What a deliciously delightful Cafe! Most friendly cashier and staff. Full of smiles. Lovely baked goods to look at and the sourdough sandwich was the best ever! The latte and hut chocolate was to die for!
I went for a quick Sunday breakfast and the place did not disappoint. The bagel was so fresh and delicious and the staff were all so lovely. Will definitely be going back.
I can’t stop visiting this place after my morning bike rides when I visit Cape Town. Always get a scrambled egg and bacon bagel as well as the chocolate croissant and cortado special before 10am. Total R99. Leave the delicious chocolate croissant for last - so yummy!
Fresh bagels and great sandwich combos, wish we were staying in Capetown longer, they sell bagels for at home with cream cheese options.
This place doesn’t miss. Some would argue that it’s hard to stuff up a bagel, but until you’ve had bad bagels, you might not know what a good bagel is. And until you’ve had an NY Bagel, you can’t calibrate the top end of your bagelometer spectrum. The staff are super friendly, the prices are so reasonable, and most importantly the food and coffee is amazing. I’ve been here 4 times in the past 7 days and I’m not even ashamed to admit it. Today’s bagel and a prompt from Google Maps while I was sitting here, alone inspired me to share a review. In the image you’ll see the cream cheese bagel, with added Smoked Trout, Capers, and Red Onion. A winning combo in my opinion otherwise I usually go for the B.A.R.T. on an everything bagel - it’s reliably good. Side note: If your bagel has cream cheese on it and it doesn’t have the Bagussy bussin’ with cream cheese Image 2 then it can’t actually be called a “bagel”. Then it’s just a “sparkling roll”.
Lovely place for a decent bagel and coffee. The lines to order can get quite long so maybe avoid peak lunch time if you want to stand inside the place. The wait last time I went was not long at all and the food was amazing. The prices are relatively decent compared to other bagel places, you're looking at ~R50 for a bagel here.
One of the best bagels in Cape Town. My favourite is the pastrami or brisket, either on a bagel or on rye. Super friendly service. There is not really a sit down facility - there are about two small tables with some chairs for you to eat quickly. So, its not ideal for a sit down and a chat kind of place. Its more grab and go. But if like, you can use the area across the road at Nude. I have given 4 stars purely for the grab and go experience and the yummy bagels. Update : 12-Jan- 2023 : The café has opened the inside seating section.
Really nice sour dough bread sandwich. Thanks for serving us 30 minutes to closing hours. Discovering Harrington Street foodfare.
Best bagels in town! Proper bagels with fresh ingredients and tasty options. Personally always go for the salmon and cream cheese, and this version was very tasty. The staff are also quite friendly and the venue is very cozy. Recommend getting there early as they do sometimes run out of bagles.
