Orpen Rest Camp

Friendly and efficient, shop is well stocked and they also offer game drives and walks... there is a watering hole which attracts all sorts of game. They also have a swimming pool.Rooms: 5/5

We stayed in one of Orpen's cottages for a couple of nights. The unit had an aircon and the basic kitchen utensils required which was passable the 2 plate stove created a less than stellar impression with the knobs worn off number replaced with tipex. The camp only has a small number of units which and is conveniently close to one of the park's entrances, both of which greatly adds to the appeal. An alternative bin system could help as well as the honey badgers wreak havoc and are aggressive at night as they knock over the bins in search of food. Important to note that this camp does not have a restaurant, but it does have a well stocked shop with pies, ice creams, cool drinks etc. The staff at check-in were friendly as well. Ultimately, this is in the Kruger National Park - so how bad can life be while there?

Stayed at Orpen 10-17 September. A small camp, around 15 bungalows or cottages if I remember correctly. Has the best view of a watering hole from almost all chalets and we saw many visitors. The cottages have all the basic equipment for self catering and the Park shop stocks all the necessary food. There is no restaurant at Orpen and the closest town is Hoedspruit which is about 40km away. The cottages are a bit more modern than some other camps but some items like kitchen utensils, Aircon and fan quite old . A big patio and gauze on windows to keep out bugs at night. A braai facility at all cottages. The camp looks better than in the past , the garden is being attended to and more plants planted and the reception area is probably the best of all the camps in the Kruger. The staff were all very friendly and efficient, from cleaning lady , Lynette to Wendy in reception to Clement and Sophiso. Orpen is 45km from Satara camp and the tar road is 1 of the best game roads in Kruger and takes about 90mins to drive at around 30km/h for proper game viewing. The 1 white lion often hangs out around the dam near Satara and we saw 2 of them just outside Orpen gate
