My guests were not impressed with the cleanliness of the place. Especially after the waiter tried to clean the table using his bare hand and then realized that it was mission impossible. Only for him to go and get a wet cloth. THANKFULLY, the food made up for what lacks. Very delicious and amazing food offering especially the platters! 5 for the food, but not the place. Everything was super tasty except the chakalaka it is tasteless and just hot. The meat is tender, well basted and well done. The chips are heavenly. They also have the best dumpling I have ever eaten in any restaurant! What I did not like was the non-smoking area being dark and closed up like a basement. We ended up sitting in a smoking area just for the vibe and Sakhumzi atmosphere.
The waiters and staff were very warm, responsive and delivered service with smiles on their faces. The food and drinks were served hot and ice cold. The music was awesome with Amapiano playing and people enjoying their meals with smiles on their faces. I will definitely visit again!
Food was really good, lots of flavor, perfectly cooked... I want some now just thinking about it. Can't wait to get back. Real chill vibes, in Orlando West, Soweto, home of Nelson mandela. It's a real nice vibe with great food, I highly recommend it.
One of my favourite restaurants in Soweto, the vibe is always on 100 and the staff is friendly and so warm and welcoming and let's not forget the FOOD ...if I could eat there everyday,I wouldFood: 5/5
Loved it!! It's quite chilled with a buffet every Tuesday R250 per head. The owner comes over to greet patrons himself. Good food and service. The music was a little too high for my liking. But a solid 4/5 from me.
First thing first....the food, they are too delicious. They are nicely cooked, with love nogal, couldn't get enough. It was not too full and the setup is in a way that people are able to social distance. Just as you approach the entrance, pictures are being taken outside so u get to have a memory of the day. I'm definately going back.
Arrived around 12:30 before it got a lot busy. You’ll find this restaurant on Vilakazi street Sakhumzi has a buffet as well as an a la carte menu; however our waiter informed us they weren’t taking orders from the menu that day. Though, an hour later, the table next to us seemed to be ordering from it; I found this quite rude of our waiter if I’m being honest. So in terms of service I wasn’t too happy on this particular day. I did want to try out the hake my sister ordered the previous time we went, it looked good. And I only eat fish so it seemed like my most viable option prior to getting there. Perhaps next time. The food at the buffet was really good, Sowetan traditional food so if you’d like to go somewhere for some home cooked food with an “event-style” catering system, this is definitely your spot. The buffet cost R205, and you may eat however much you can for 2 hours, it does also include dessert. Add a can of appletiser for a R220 meal deal. The food was fresh and I really enjoyed their housemade chilli, especially with the vegetable soup. The staff was kind, in general, and the vibe was buzzing. Soweto on a Sunday is definitely a mood; just make sure to arrive in good time. I do wish they would limit the amount of people allowed inside, especially around the food. But the staff was there to dish for us. There was a heater outside but they hadn’t switched it on yet, which is the only reason my family and I decided to leave sooner rather than later. I’ll post a video of this restaurant review on my Tiktok and Instagram @pashieb.
Our Company went to Sakhumzi for our year end function on the 9th of December and it was a absolute disaster!!! We had reserved a private dining area for 60 people and I had dropped off some simple table decorations the day before which they agreed to set up for us before arrival. When we arrived at the venue the place was packed beyond capacity in my opinion. They only allocated tables and chairs for our party to accommodate about 40 people and the table settings were a mess, It looked like someone started with it and just left it half way. When asking them to bring extra tables and chairs we were told that there weren't any left because they were fully booked out. This left us, the guests, running around the place trying to find chairs for everyone to sit on. We took any chairs we could find, all mismatched and some broken. When we all finally had seats after about an hour and the function could start, it got even worse. I explained to the lady beforehand that we will be working with a ticket system for the drinks. Each staff member will be allocated 3 drinks tickets and they will give their ticket to the waiter, who in turn will bring them their drink. I have to also mention that we were only allocated 2 waiters to serve 60 people... not nearly enough in my opinion. The waiters started taking the drinks tickets from our staff but this was so poorly managed that by the time that we had to leave some people still had not received their first round of drinks, and those who did, received drinks without glasses. They would just come put a bunch of cans and bottles on a table and walk away, leaving our staff to try figure our who the drinks belonged to. I asked to speak to a manager multiple times and each time someone else would rock up, so I dont know how many managers this place has. But each time the manager would apologise profusely about the mess and promise to rectify it immediately and then disappear, never to be seen again. They were obviously greedy and took way more bookings than their infrastructure could handle. This was our first year end function after Covid and all the staff was so excited for the event but we all left extremely disappointed. I cannot believe that a famous tourist destination like Sakhumzi could be so ill-prepared for an event that they should be able to do with their eyes closed.
That home cooked meal that has a mother's love in it amazing staff and a beautiful atmosphere.Food: 5/5
Apparently the kitchen was closed & they only served buffet, but on the serving table there was just left over food and the stew was just bones. The food was also salty. The people serving buffet were very rude and gave attitude as if they don't want to help. There's too many flies, they should do something about that. Waiters don't serve with sense of urgency, I wonder how it's like over weekends or busy days. Kid-friendliness: Not kid friendly at all, maybe teenagers, but not kids. Parking: Park illegally on the streets, or far away.
