Stevenson

About

STEVENSON is a contemporary art gallery with premises in Cape Town and Johannesburg, and is jointly owned by its team of directors.

Description

The gallery opened as Michael Stevenson in Green Point, Cape Town, in 2003, and subsequently partnered with David Brodie in Johannesburg in the form of Brodie/Stevenson, which opened in 2008. That same year the Cape Town gallery moved into its current premises in Woodstock, and since November 2010 the Johannesburg gallery has occupied its Juta Street location in Braamfontein.

The gallery has hosted a series of solo and group exhibitions that engage with contemporary art practice in South Africa as well as Africa and its diaspora. In addition to giving (South) African artists access to the rest of the world, the gallery's FOREX programme, started in 2009, has brought the work of international artists like Rineke Dijkstra, Thomas Hirschhorn, Glenn Ligon and Walid Raad to South Africa, often for the first time.

A cornerstone of Stevenson is its active publication programme that includes catalogues for many of its exhibitions and artists. Because of its location, art fairs are particularly important to Stevenson: it has recently participated in abc (Berlin), Paris Photo, Art Basel Miami Beach, Arco (Madrid), the Armory Show (New York) and Art Basel.

I love the new venue, feels very homely! Great art presentation as always.
In my opinion one of the best galleries in the area. Always have great shows, central location to the other galleries around so definitely think it must be added to your monthly gallery visits.
We visted artist Ian Grose' exhibition featuring good portaits at Stevenson. Located in a converted family house, parking in the front yard was easy and available. The exhibition space walls and ceiling were white painted, well lighted and clean with the paintings properly displayed and hung. It was worth attending despite the pouring rain.
Visited with my work team. We enjoyed the exhibition, especially the interactive part of it at the end where you got to win a few art books. Small gallery with a lot to offer. Nice use of space by the artists
A gallery that practices horizontalism and engages with artists beyond the limitations of traditional art forms. A gallery that also has spaces in JHB, CPT and Amsterdam. Open to public for visits and invitational shows. Contributes to international and local artistic appetites.
I've been to the Stevenson in Cape Town and now I've been to the one in Johannesburg as well. Both are great spaces in terms of design and atmosphere. I visited the Stevenson almost a month ago, there was an exhibition going on by a foreign artist. And as peopleand artists in my case we all have our own personal tastes when it comes to art so I could appreciate his work for what it was but it did not appeal to my tastes...this is why I have given a moderate rating.
It's a good place to visit to refresh your mind with art
It was quite nice, I went to an exhibition of Penny Siopis, which was amazing as she was there for a walkabout. The space is quite small, but I heard they were moving to Parkhurst soon, I think.
I feel Inspired. Check out the Stevenson Gallery in JHB if you are keen on some culture and great local and international art. My favourite Gallery in the northern hemisphere of #southafrica. #art
Fabulous experience, bringing African art to the public
