I just spent the weekend camping here with my 27 year old son. Thoroughly enjoyed our time with a camp site next to the river, clear night skies as if deep in the bush. The owners introduced themselves to us and were very friendly offering to assist with any of our needs. A little gem of nature just 1 hour from home. Hope to make time for more trips.
Just spent the most awesome weekend with my Fiancé at The Crooked Tree. Beautiful, serene campsite with designated sites, 4 x ablution facilities, each with a shower, toilet and basin, very convenient with gas geysers. We had concrete tables and seats and the owner has started building concrete fire pits. We recommend this gem as it is only an hour's drive from Jhb and you are in Paradise. Will definitely be back.
Read some of the reviews, was hesitant to go. BUT glad we did, we been back a bunch of times. Its in the bush, right next to the river and not so busy as you would find in other caravan and camp sites. +- 10 camp sites, guy cleans every morning. heard music once or twice from neighboring grounds, but not too bad. The river flowing is nice and relaxing and loud at night. I see people complaining owners not there to greet you, should they setup your tent for you also? lol You book, you pay you get your camp site number and you pull in. Wife and kids love it. Only complaintKidding, gosh darn monkeys stole my braai meat for breakfast LOL Little daughter loved seeing monkeys run through our camp site : Will def go back.
Just spent a wonderful tranquil off the grid week end with my partner next to the flowing river that puts you in a relaxed mood which we both loved. The owners hospitality was wonderful. Will definitely be back.
WORST CAMPSITE I HAVE EVER BEEN TO!! The Crooked tree is a disgraceful venue for any sort of camp style. You need to pay R450 per night with ZERO hospitality service the host wasnt even aware of our arrival date! No electricity, no lights, you need to walk half a km to get to the 1 bathroom facility which has a broken solar light there is zero outdoor experience with absolutely nothing to do,unless you intend on breaking your neck in their "swimming hole" with all the noise coming from the main road it's impossible to sleep especially knowing that there is no fence separating the campsite and the main road for anyone to join the campfire! You pay more for a closed off fence where there is litrually only a fence with sand with BROKEN and WORN-OUT FURNITURE. Absolutely the worst camping experience! Seems that the host is looking to make a quick buck! DO NOT GO THERE YOU WILL BE DISAPPOINTED!
Beautiful place with lovely staff and owners. We had an issue with the neighboring resort, Lover's Rock, playing extremely loud music at all hours but the staff helped us to move to a more peaceful campsite, they were incredibly gracious and attentive. The campsite is lush and well spaced and dogs everywhere, what more could you ask for?
I took my husband here for his birthday with our 2year old daughter and our dog. We weren't greeted by anyone when we got there. The "kiosk" as noted on their map on the website is closed looks like it might not have ever worked - So you can't buy Ice or wood like most other campsites. The trails are not well maintained through the storms we've been having lately so we had about a hectare of land to walk around with the toddler and dog. There was music playing until 21h30 and when we called the owners they lied and said it came from next door. Unfortunately we could hear the music through the phone and the owner did not like us calling him out on that. He said we should pack our things immediately and leave and he will give us a refund. Obviously not knowing that we had a 2year old with us. He also said that the music is an "every weekend thing" with the place from next door. He said they were having a party and that they get enough business they don't need our business anyway. It was a little bit disappointing to be there expecting at least a good walk and ending up walking through the campsite, and then to be treated like we were supposed to expect music in a campsite where the rules clearly states that no camper is allowed to play music. Just, don't go here.
After all the negative reviews I read on Google, I thought I would put my 2 cents in. We have been coming to Crooked Tree for a few day visits but have never camped. We had the best weekend. The camping grounds are clean and as there are never a lot of people you really do feel like you are camping in nature and not the usual busy camping situation. We were lucky that it had been raining and so the magalies river was flowing so there was lots of rock swimming. There are 2 sets of toilets and showers and you can close the door and have the whole shower to yourself. Its great being able to bring your dog with you and they have 3 beautiful black horses that roam and graze around you while you are chilling. We stayed at campsite ten which is right in the middle and spacious and has more grass. Sadly a lot of the places were quite muddy because of all the rain we have been having but there are areas with grassy spots to sit. Close to Magalies town, such a lovely peaceful getaway only an hour from JHB
Lovely peaceful camping retreat amongst the beautiful trees and river. This is a wonderful family getaway for the whole family and ofcourse all your fur babies conveniently located close to lovely hikes, foodie experiences and exploring!
Not very happy with the place. No one to great you on arrival. Only one ablution facility on the whole camp site. Must say the gas geysers work very well. Very loud music every night from Lovers Rock that is 400m from Campsite is very disturbing! Lot of road noise from main road. Maintenance on Camp Site is not done at all!
