Nobody likes to leave bad reviews. But it is necessary at times, unpleasant as it may be. I stayed at the Vagabond via Airbnb, but had to leave abruptly due to getting very ill from extensive black mold in the bathroom. While mold is something that can happen anywhere, the reaction of the absentee landlord was really what made the experience so awful. When i communicated about the mold to him with photos and explained how sick I was feeling coughing, feverish, headache, weak, etc. his reaction was defensive and completely unconcerned for my wellbeing. This owner even tried to imply I was somehow imagining it all, as nobody else had complained. Classic gaslighting! Mold is strictly illegal in South Africa and no landlord is allowed to charge any rent for a place that is unsafe in such a way. I should have immediately been refunded my entire months rent, but instead was forced to pay for three nights and cleaning fee ! Airbnb is completely, utterly useless at customer service and their new Aircover policy is worthless, so caveat emptor, friends, if you book a place for a long stay do ensure it has a flexible cancel policy. I am quite sure, based on the defensive and unprofessional communication with this host, that he will write a nasty response to this review. Piers, I do feel that people who don't enjoy hospitality should not do it. You clearly are not focused on guest experience and should hire someone else to manage your guesthouse so that nobody else need go thru what i did. I am, incidentally, still weak from the mold poisoning even 2 weeks later.
Great, quiet little spot, amazing decor, most importantly they really look after you...
