Warm-hearted staff, expert guides and unobstructed views of the waterhole from the deck are standout features.Sunbirds, attracted to the many aloes which surround the main deck, are just some of the many small delights you can expect on your stay at Thornybush Game Lodge."

We stayed at two thornybush lodges on our trip and this blew the other place out of the water even though the other prices was 1/3 of the price higher. The Thornybush main lodge looks to have had a recent update. The accommodations were amazing and well designed. Everything was practical and asthetically pleasing. The service was 10/10. The food didn’t exactly hit all of our tastes but it was very delicious and would say 9.5/10. What sets this place apart for us we’re two things. 1. Our guide/tracker and 2. The spa including the staff and the management. 1. I can not stress this enough request Sarah as your guide! Seriously you’d be doing yourself a disservice if you didn’t. She incredibly well skilled and passionate English woman with knowledge for days. You can sense the love for the animals that she has plus the desire to help her team car companions have the best possible Safari experience imaginable. Her 14 year career of being a guide has made her stand out above the rest. Plus she’s funny, pretty, kind, smart and well and over all awesome person and animal conservationist. Request her if you want to have an out of this world safari experience. Kenny her tracker is incredible they’ve been together for at least four years and can find the most elusive animals. He’s also amazing, so friendly and they make an amazing team. By the way I can’t stress it enough, I saw the other guides and they’re great but we got so lucky to have fallen in the hands of the best one! 2. Ok now time for the spa review. The manager is a incredible being of light and love. Her energy is calming and so amazing. She gave us a tour of the newly opened facility that just opened 6 weeks prior. It was phenomenal and they give out free green juice and vitality shots so that alone is worth a visit to the spa. So because she gave us a tour and everything was beyond our expectations I asked to book for the 11am appt next day. They book up quick so make sure you plan for that. 11am-12pm is their busiest times. I opted for the Crystal healing massage and OMG! It included crystals, reiki, essential oils. And hot stones. It started with a face massage facing up and went on from there for 90 min of the best experience of my life. I had Tuli and she really is a shaman with her healing skills. I’m reiki certified and you know you’ve got a good one when you know what to look for. It was one of the highlights of the whole trip. Do yourself a favor and get this massage you won’t regret it.
Great place for a Safari. The facilities are top notch, the staff is excellent, the food is delicious, and the number of animals I saw on Safari was amazing.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedYes
We had an incredible 5 nights at Thornybush Game Lodge in 2022. We are avid bush-lovers and Thornybush impressed us thoroughly. Incredible sightings, comfortable rooms and wonderful staff. Our ranger and tracker Tracey and Orlando were fantastic and ensured they did everything in their power to deliver phenomenal sightings.
Absolutely flawless lodge and experience. You will never see African wildlife quite like this, because guides are excellent trackers and allowed to go right up the animals. Amazing rooms, perfect service and platinum star meals, all day.
I cannot recommend Thornybush highly enough. My mother and I visited on a trip to South Africa coordinated by Lauren at Ker-Downey Africa. She had arranged for us to fly by charter from Johannesburg, so we landed at an airstrip literally just outside the gate of Thornybush, and this, in itself was a super fun part of the experience and I do recommend doing this rather than flying into the Hodespruit airport ~20 minute drive. We were met at the airstrip by our guide and tracker for the visit and driven by the open safari Land Cruiser the short distance through the lodge gate. The facilities are spotlessly clean and well-maintained, the bedding was incredibly comfortable, the staff are extremely warm, welcoming, and helpful, the food is fresh and exquisite, and the reserve is just phenomenal. The suites are luxurious without being obnoxious, and we never had a concern for our safety. I highly recommend the outdoor shower, although the claw-foot tub and indoor shower are preferred during the cooler nights. You also have plenty of company in the outdoor shower, including small frogs and a baby baboon who watched me from the rooftop of our suite. There are many baboons in the area, so attention must be paid to keeping doors latched when you're not around. Guests are always accompanied by staff at night when not inside a guest suite, as there are wild animals present although extensive fencing keeps larger game and lions out; baboons, monkeys, warthogs, and nyala antelope are frequently seen on the grounds of the lodge. The common area, including the dining area overlooks a currently, in dry winter season dry river bed and watering hole, at which we observed elephants, water buffalo, hippo, baboons, warthogs, and antelope. The furniture is beautiful and it's easy to spend a good portion of the day relaxing and watching the animals from either the lodge's common area or your suite's porch. We saw all the Big Five, including leopards in trees, lion cubs, and baby elephants. Also many giraffes, African wild dogs, warthogs, hippos, numerous bird species, vervet monkeys, baboons, and a variety of antelope species. Our guide Kaden had encyclopedic knowledge of all the species we saw, and was expertly respectful of the animals in allowing them enough room to carry on their normal activities and be minimally disturbed by our vehicle. Our tracker John the Best was able to spot the most minute signs of recent animal activity, and together, he and Kaden enabled us to see the most remarkable things like a mother leopard leading cub to game she had stashed in a tree. Kaden and John are a truly remarkable team and made our game drive experience just out of this world. As a private reserve with a fenceless border with Kruger, all the animals are present but the number of vehicles is quite limited. Even with the small number of vehicles present, all of the guides are in constant communication to share the locations of significant sightings, and there is a respectful observance of rules such as no more than 2 vehicles being present at a single sighting at a time to optimize guest experience and minimize disruption to the animals in the case of rarer sightings, like the wild dogs, vehicles would take a number and alternate who would remain at the sighting, but frequently ours was the only vehicle present. Our experience at Thornybush was simply unparalleled, and I cannot recommend them highly enough.
This place cannot be faulted in all aspects. Game views are outstanding, and the guide and tracker were very good Muxe and John . The lodging is clean, crawlers free, and quiet. Food and drinks are top class
A wonderful lodge and truly amazing experience. Great game sightings in a perfect setting, the wilderness walks make it stand out from a lot of the other lodges in the area.Visited onWeekendWait timeNo wait
My stay was amazing! They take care of everything to the smallest detail. I stayed in room 20 which was amazing. It is one of two rooms at the resort to have private plunge pool. The meals were excellent and varied. Each night there was a different type of dining experience, fine dining, bbq etc. I do highly recommend staying 3 nights to ensure you see everything you want to.
We had a great stay at Thornybush, where we spent four nights in April. Our team - Sean & John 'The Best' - were really great at finding us animal sightings, with two leopard eating their kills on two different days! The lodge is nicely laid out with plenty of social distancing. The food was really good, with great attention to detail and catering for all needs. The spa is also very nice, I arrived with a bit of a neck spasm after the long drive from Joburg, and they sorted me out with a great back & shoulder massage. The rooms have everything you would need/want, but one criticism is the fact that the beds are about a full meter off the ground, so it's a bit of a mission to get into bed when you're short. Overall, a fantastic lodge, with great safari experience.
