Description

Umkulu safari and canoe trails is a Southern African owned company based in South Africa, Namibia and Botswana and specializing in safari and canoe trails throughout Southern Africa. Established in 1996, the company has grown to a formidable force in the tourism industry, due to its excellent service, value for money trails and “hands on” operations. The name is pure African, being derived from the Zulu language meaning “big” ; “the big wise one” or something bigger and is used in many African languages as a sign of respect on its own or in conjunction with other words.

WARNING: THE OWNER HENNIE IS SELLING THIS BUSINESS, WHICH IS WHY IT IS CHAOS THERE! First the good stuff: the guides tried their best and the scenery is fanatasic. The bad stuff: sales and operations are not taking responsibility and blaming each other. We were told that vegans are catered for by sales and ended up taking all my own supplies, because operations were not told that there will be vegan on the trip. Sales says they informed operations. I was told that we would get a refund for taking our own food by the owner. To date 2 months later, the owner stopped responding and no refund. Then the river was in flood, which is fine, BUT that means you only on the river for 3 hours per day. Nobody informed us of this problem BEFORE we set off. Then when it became obivious that we either finish our trip way faster than advertised or just row a few hours and then camp the rest of the day not really a rafting trip hey, we elected to finish a day earlier as it was super hot in December. Operations then took a day to come and fetch us at the end point. Apparently the 1 hour trip took 4 hours due to border problems. That was straight lies - took us 1.5 hours back AND everybody at the border knows the company so where did the problems come from? At the camp we heard that they left late to come and get us. DON'T BOOK WITH THEM AS THEY DO NOT CARE ABOUT THEIR CLIENTS AT THIS STAGE.
If you consider doing a rowing trip use another company. The river is amazing, but I strongly advise not using Umkulu. From the moment we got there everybody we interacted with was extremely unprofessional. We paid for a luxury trip, but did not even receive enough food for the majority of the meals. The guides made us wait for up to 4 hours at points because they were so disorganized.
Extremely poorly organized trip. Unhelpful and unprofessional staff members Anthony and Ray . Fair quality of food which is ok if you are not paying alot , BUT we paid over 5k for this trip , no daily structure when it comes to serving meals on time or distance rowed each day. Higly reccommend doing the trip as it is a lifetime experience , however, use a different company. The website says it won an award in 2014 for best oranje river guides . ALOT has changed since 2014
Had the opportunity to join them on kayak trails through the Richtersveld... Highly recommended!!!
Next lv character building experience and pure evidence of how working together can make life extreeeemly easy. Our family are truly stronger after this. Thx a lot Jannie, Anthony, Hennie, etc.
