If you are looking to do hike in the Royal National Park this is the place to stay. I was going to book at the more elite Cavern Resort but it would have been a 4 hour round trip by car which would have been a huge mistake until a friend told be about Witsieshoek. I chose a chalet and was given one with a view of the entire amphitheater which was special. Even if I had chosen a normal room I would have still been happy as they are neat and tidy. I was not expecting to stay at 12 Apostles Hotel. This is a lodge that is clean, comfortable and the menu is simple but had tasty meals. The staff are very warm and friendly. I did the amphitheater hike. Best place to stay if you are doing his hike. Ask to feed the vultures if you have time and patience. 10/10 rating from me. Thanks Jan and team.
Witsieshoek was recommended to us by a number of people. The location is spectacular and our room faced Sentinel Peak which was amazing. The rooms are basic, but have everything you need. My only real complaint was the food. The website touted it as “ substantial, home-cooked evening meals” along with a buffet breakfast which is included with the price. Our first night, 2 out of the 3 vegetarian dishes were unavailable and so was another main course. This left us with just a few options. The food was pretty basic, nothing to rave about. The second night they seemed to have all the items on the menu and the food overall seemed better quality then the previous night. The breakfast buffet was also pretty basic, it had a host of different cereals, yogurt, drinks, scrambled eggs and meats. Overall it was a good experience but it would have been better if the food had been something to talk about and the main lounge area wasn’t so dark and dingy. Nice outdoor seating would have been great as well!
Absolutely enjoyed our relaxation at Witsieshoek. The linen on the comfy King size beds was lovely.. The staff were amazing at sorting out mattresses for the kiddies. Food was delicious and not badly priced at all for being on top of the world. Views are just the best.Rooms: 5/5
The setting and the views are just spectacular, really something to experience, and the Drakensberg mountains are absolutely surreal. The service and friendliness of the staff is exceptional too. The only complaint is that the buildings and rooms need a bit of maintenance and the lounge and dining rooms could use an overhaul. This place is a must for hikers, walkers and adventurers, and provides awesome access to the berg from the Free State side.
One of the best hotels for the whole trip. Perfect mattress, soft feather pillow, blackout curtains, comfortable shower. Everything is well designed and reasoned. Not cheap at all, but value for money is high enough except for the service. It's absolutely awful. We had to wait an ages for our order in the restaurant btw, food is also so-so. Breakfast is included, but they just forgot to prepare it for the time of tracking transfer. And finally we were delayed for almost one hour waiting for our sandwiches with nothing.
We didn’t stay here but The shuttle service worked well for us. Call up the day before they’re on what’s app too and book your place. They leave at something like 6am, 7.30am, 9.30 and 11.30. They tell you to call or message when you’re at a certain point on the way back and they come to collect you. The hike to the falls is amazing scenery and green and good atm but no water yet!! We think all the fees for everything are a bit steep and the 170 rand each for the transfer should definitely be put towards fixing the windscreen wipers on the car. We also got back to the lodge after the walk and went to get a drink in the bar and after being there about half an hour were basically asked to leave because we weren’t staying there. Which is a bit odd when the bar was empty and we were paying for a drink and some pudding.
The lodge offers a great service besides boarding. They offer a shuttle up the mountain to begin the world famous Chain Ladder hike. Great insight from the shuttle drivers, they are very friendly.Service: 4/5
Rooms are very basic, good beds and decent shower which was all we need, the transfer towards the trailhead is necessary and the food at the restaurant was super, the fillet steak was amazing! Although the rooms are overpriced, the food and transfer make up for it. Packed lunches for the hike can be ordered as well which is convenient but not the best.
Decent lodge with beautiful, spacious rooms, though there was no way to get natural light, without people walking by looking straight into our bed. Wi-Fi in the room was available but a little slow and VERY unreliable. Restaurant served decent food but was VERY slow and struggled accommodating dietary restrictions.
I have been coming here for years with the school I work, used to be an establishment that was top class but i feel that over the past few years they have dropped their standard. Should probably have a star removed. We paid for the shuttle and were told that it would be the 3 if us and one other guy. As we get to the shuttle they drive off with another group that should've waited their turn. Apparently they booked the day before but that's not what I was informed. Very poor service considering I have a group of school learners waiting at the car park for us so we can hike up to the falls and set up camp before the heavier rain arrived. Side note the filter coffee us always luke warm. They forget the basics which a 3 star lodge should never forget.
