I was only vaguely aware of the Hermitage before I happen to be in Nashville and decided to visit. Turns out it is the third most popular presidential home, after George Washington and Thomas Jefferson's homes (Mount Vernon and Monticello). The Visitor Center is very well equipped and has numerous interesting exhibits as well as very engaging docents. The house itself is in extremely good condition with a significant number of original furnishings and decorations as well as daily articles that belong to Andrew Jackson and his family. The grounds were nice and scenic and the outbuildings were in generally good repair as well. We took about 2 and 1/2 hours to see everything including walking around the grounds and the outbuildings. Photography is prohibited inside the house, but there is a nice gift shop where you can pick up books of the interior of the home and you're free to take as many photographs of the exterior grounds and outbuildings as you would like. If you're in Nashville I would highly recommend this is an interesting part of our nation's history!

We visited the Hermitage on a whim thinking it would be a good way to kill an hour of our day. We ended up spending three hours there and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. The visitor center is large and contains a museum plus small theater, gift shop and restaurant, which was actually very good. The old mansion is situated a ways back from the visitor center and is on 1100 acres. There are nice paths that have numbered placards throughout the property. We especially enjoyed the self guided audio tour that corresponded with those numbered placards. The grounds contain the big house, slave quarters, spring house and a few smaller buildings. It was definitely a lot of walking but worth the effort. My husband, who is most certainly not a history buff, really enjoyed the experience, too. We'd highly recommend the Hermitage if you've got a few hours to kill plus it's only about 30 minutes from Nashville. (Bring your walking shoes!)

Extensive plantation with a mansion, this historic location is a great place to visit for any age. Decent admission fees and cafe prices, free parking. Guided and Self-Guided tours are available. They do not allow backpacks or large bags on the grounds. The grounds are expansive, plan to walk a fair amount if you want to see all the buildings. The mansion tour is guided, but isn't really all that impressive. The rooms are sparsely furnished, the most impressive parts being the history itself and the custom wallpaper of the entrance area.

I had never visited before, and I absolutely loved the museum, the house, the garden, and the grounds. There is a ton of history, and original furniture. There are lots of historical boards that provide background information and pictures throughout the property. I thought that the guides did a great job of giving me information regarding president Jackson. I would definitely go again if I was busy Nashville.

We went here on a whim while visiting family. So glad we did! Beautiful grounds and highly knowledgeable staff; I (and others) asked broad ranging and obscure questions and were always surprised by the depth of the answers. The self-paced audio tours are interesting and informative, and there are separate tracks for adults and children. Great parking and very reasonable entrance fees. We were here for around 2 hours and saw only a quarter of the grounds and exhibits. Will definitely go back on our next visit.
