The Ashtanga Yoga Room is a new beautiful space located on the 2nd floor at 2521 Jena Street. The new space offers two full showers, a quiet & peaceful meditation room and a small boutique among other surprises. We offer classes mornings, noon and evenings.

Melanie Fawer is the owner and director of The Yoga Room. She is certified by Sri K. Pattabhi Jois to teach Ashtanga Yoga. This is a rare honor that it is only held by 18 teachers in the U.S. which makes her an asset to the local New Orleans yoga community. At The Ashtanga Yoga Room classes are offered in the traditional Mysore Style and Led classes. Mysore originates from the location in which Pattabhi Jois lived and taught yoga for over 70 years. In Mysore Style students practice at their own pace while the teacher gives physical adjustments and verbal cues. This allows students to cultivate a moving meditation and to experience the sensations of the body while in postures. If you are new to Ashtanga Mysore style is perfect for you (we offer Intro to Ashtanga Mondays 6:15pm). The teacher will work with you individually to help you learn the primary series postures. With regular attendance you will have your own practice that you can utilize at any time. The Led class is meant as a compliment to your Mysore practice. In the Led class students move in unison at a rhythmic pace. Every breath and movement is coordinated by the instructor. This creates a group energy that shows you different aspects of the practice.
The Ashtanga Yoga method incorporates Ujjayi (a pranayamic breathing technique), Dristi (focusing the gaze on specific points), and Bandha (internal energetic a muscular contractions that harness stability in the body and mind). These tools are known as the Tristana method. This method tethers the mind to the different focal points so that your practice will ultimately lead you inward. Melanie is focused on leading her students into the life changing results of this powerful practice.

Beautiful studio located in the heart of midtown. Highly recommend working with Melanie Fawer whether you're a beginner or experienced yoga practitioner. Melanie excels in providing alignment based cues and adjustments to help advance and fine tune your practice. Facilities are best-in-class and there is a cafe located downstairs with plenty of restaurants and shops nearby.
I think the experience of yoga in this studio with these teachers is a gift. Melanie is very good at observing the students and seeing what their needs are. She is a very strong practitioner and her adjustments are amazing. This practice will make you strong both physically and emotionally. The studio is so beautiful. All details have been tended to. The boutique has amazing clothing and jewelry. The sauna is wonderful. There is a meditation room, a biomat and showers if you need to jet straight to work from yoga. It is an incredible experience and New Orleans is lucky to have such a great studio with such wonderful teachers.
Coming to the Ashtanga yoga room has been most rewarding. Melanie was an absolute delight, her professionalism and knowledge of yoga, proper body mechanics, and calming personality made for an all around great experience.
Practicing with Melanie has changed my life in so many ways. It is inspiring to work with someone so passionate about what they do and devoted to helping people live happier, healthier, more authentic lives. AYR is not just a yoga studio, it’s a community. Highly, highly recommend!!
Melanie was super supportive and helpful throughout Mysore style. She broke down a few of the postures I've been getting into incorrectly and helped with some knee issues I've been having. Whenever I come back to nawlins I'll definitely take practice again at the Yoga Room!
As traditional as yoga can get. If you are looking for a neat, proper & safe yoga practice, this is the studio for you. All teachers have been trained by the studio Owner & Director, Melanie Fawer - who in turn studied for years in Mysore, India with the late Sri K Pattabhi Jois; so you will find consistency in teachings. Ashtanga yoga can be a very athletic practice, but can also be modified to cater each individual student's need - it is also a great way to have a home practice if you have time limitations and what not. I have been practicing for 3 yrs and ever since my first day, I knew this was the practice meant for me. Go check them out!!
I've known Melanie since 2014 after I moved from Brazil to Baton Rouge. I made the drive from BR to NOLA almost every Sunday to see her. She literally saved my practice. In Brazil I practiced 6 days a week in a Shala and self practice at 4am in my living room in Baton Rouge was quite a transition. I don't know that I could have survived that without all the attention, care and outstanding adjustments I received on my Mysore Sundays with Melanie!
I immediately realized upon my entrance into the Yoga room that I had stumbled upon something special. The teachers and their method/style of sharing their teachings with the students was different from anything that I have ever experienced in any yoga studio or class. If you are interested in learning a way of life, a way of self improvement and self reflection and all around personal growth..this is the yoga studio to vist. The primary series and the gentle entrance into learning it by way of teaching allowed me to not feel in any way intimidated or anxious but excited and welcomed. XXOO
Melanie’s and the studios detailed teaching is perfect for all body types and levels. The beauty of the studio is mirrored in the quality of the teaching. Wonderful space, teachers and classes.
