In 1974, EHCHS established the Boriken Health Center to provide the highest quality of bilingual patient-centered services to the residents of El Barrio and other underserved New York communities.
The Boriken Neighborhood Health Center is a federally qualified health center which is designated by the National Committee for Quality Assurance as a Patient Centered Medical Home (Level 3). Boriken provides the following ambulatory care services: adult medicine; pediatrics; adolescent health; family medicine; obstetrics; gynecology; nutrition; dental; podiatry; ophthalmology; dermatology, cardiology; onsite laboratory; social work, psychiatry, mental health and substance abuse counseling; comprehensive HIV-related education, counseling and testing, case management and primary care services and transportation. Boriken’s School Based Health Program provides medical, mental health and health education services to students of five local elementary and middle schools at the campuses of PS 7, 112 and 155.
In 2014, the Boriken Neighborhood Health Center moved to its new state-of-the-art Green facility, significantly expanding our capacity to provide the highest quality of fully bilingual, community-based patient-centered care. The Center collaborates extensively with other local agencies and maintains extensive referral relationships through which it coordinates the provision of all services which are not available onsite.
The East Harlem Council for Human Services, Inc. also operates the Boriken Neighborhood Health Center and various educational and support programs, including the Bilingual Head Start Program (two sites), Senior Nutrition Program (two sites with meal delivery to other agencies), School Health Program and WIC Program.
Since 1965, the East Harlem Council for Human Services, Inc. has provided the highest quality of fully bilingual health and human services to the East Harlem community, through the leadership of a Board of Directors comprised predominantly of community residents and users of services. Boriken's mission is to maintain excellence in providing comprehensive medical, dental, health education and social services to the residents of East Harlem without regard to the individual patient's ability to pay.
