It’s an imposing monument that welcomes visitors to Central Park. It commemorates the destruction of the naval ship of the same name, which killed many American sailors and triggered the Spanish-American War of 1898. As a Filipino, the war is of interest to me because the Spanish defeat led to Spain ceding the Philippines to the US.
