Probably the second best location for viewing cherry blossoms in Central Park (best is Cherry Hill). There is nice row of cherry blossom trees right at the entrance to the obelisk. The obelisk itself is eroded on 3 out of the 4 sides. Only the side facing the Met is still intact (and visible from the Egyptian wing inside the Met). There are benches surrounding the obelisk, so really a nice location to sit and enjoy the cherry blossoms in spring. As other reviewer has mentioned, you will need a wide angle lens to capture the entire obelisk along with the cherry blossom when you're close, so take your selfie on the footpath leading up to the obelisk.

Get a wide angle camera for a great selfie. Visit in Springtime with cherry blossom in the background, coming up soon 2018~!. Either you take selfie here or at the Victoria Embankment, London (hint summer time), Obélisque de Louxor in the middle of Place de la Concorde in Paris (early September) which is HUGE! or go to Egypt. My next trip to visit Sister Pharaoh Cleopatra in person, never mind her needles.

First erected at Helipolis Egypt in 1600 B.C. it has now found it's way to NYC central park. It's a little out of the way but definitely worth checking out.

Erosion because of its location makes it hard to be restored. There aren't many honorable cultivated elderly who can repair the metutu.
