Made a reservation and arrived 30 minutes early, we were promptly seated. The plastic barriers that were placed in between each and every table has been removed. I have to admit when eating there, I felt uncomfortable as every table is within 3 feet away from you and they tend to be fully packed even on a Thursday night at 9:30PM. The menu is extensive, I ordered two orders of the nabeyaki udon and the fried chicken appetizer. The fried chicken was soggy which was disappointing. There is a paste that is served alongside, but I would rather see a sauce since it is difficult to apply a paste to fried chicken. The udon themselves are a specific type and are not the usual everyone may be familiar with. It has sort of a more sumptuous texture in the sense that if you squeezed an udon with your lips, it would feel like a snap instead of the usual mush im used to. Almost as if the udon is Al dente, this is a preference for some, but not mine. The service itself is courteous, but can be slow at times. Water was never refilled and food was never checked on after serving. Overall, it’s worth trying as it is recognized by Michelin, but not worth a repeat. The crowd appears to be mostly couples or close friends with small parties of 2-3 people average.
We called in advance to make sure we wanted the outdoor seating but when we arrived the restaurant the staff said it’s not available for us to get the seat. We asked twice to make sure to move us to outdoor seating if there’s vacant seats but ended up eating indoor that night and never got the chance to be moved outside. The udon is quite good and delicious, but the fried tofu my friend had in the bowl was overly seasoned and it’s ridiculously sour. So we notified the staff and they made another bowl for us and treated us a piece of cake, which is tasty!
Ive heard this place gets really busy but maybe because of the holidays we got lucky and were able to walk in on a friday night. There was staff buzzing around the front but no one said hello or “give us a moment” so we were kind of just chilling there for 5 minutes looking around. I get it on a busy day but on a slow day? Gave me careless , Ill greet them when Im ready Im on closing mode already vibe. Regardless, udon was delicious. The vegetarian tomato ramen had the tastiest broth with fresh tomatoes and mushrooms. The tempura was amazing. My friend didn’t like how chewy the cold udon noodles were but they are prepared different than the hot udon noodles on purpose we assumed. Decor was very cozy and perfect on a winter day.
We swung by here right before the place opened to see a line. Not sure if that’s an every weekend experience but be warned. The menus are vague but essentially says it all. We ordered the agedashi tofu, chicken mushroom udon which had a surprise of spinach with yuzu, and tan tan pork udon which was creamy tasting with really good pork pieces. Both soups were well put together, with quality ingredients cooked with care. Took two stars off only because the quality of the noodles was inconsistent. One bowl was good with the right amount of bite, but the other was much too soft. All in all, this place is basically a good spot with simple soups and good ingredients.
My bf and I came around 6:30pm on a Friday night and about 20 mins later that’s when tables started to fill up. The outdoor seatings were all reserved so we sat inside and the tables were very close to each other. We ordered their 4 piece karaage, tori & kinoko udon and nabeyaki udon. I was disappointed in the texture of the udon noodles since it was on the firm side. I thought both the broth were delicious. But overall it didn’t meet my expectation for it being featured as a Michelin Bib Gourmand. Maybe we should’ve ordered something else? Since the tables were so close, I saw the woman next to me ordered their mentai udon and later overheard her ordered a completely new udon dish lol
Hanon was recommended by our friends who are super picky with Japanese cuisine, especially Udon. Their entrance is humble & simple and it's easy to miss. There are more patio seatings with cozy ambiance than indoor seatings. We had their Chicken Karaage, Agenasu Kinoko Ankake Eggplant with mushroom and Half & Half Kamo Seiro Udon to share with a group of 2. We love everything, especially the eggplant and mushroom, which was braised so flavorful and juicy. The udon was also good and the noodle was chewy and perfect with the sauce. However, their service was slow and reluctant despite of their great food. We asked for water & check so many times but we ended up requesting from the counter directly ourselves.
The outdoor seating are was cute and cool! we sat in a tent under the grape vine trellis. The trellis were full of grapes . The food was delicious especially the eggplant with mushroom, it was full of umami, if you are vegan you would love it. Downside is it took long time to serve the meal....
My girlfriend and I got the Karaage, seiro tempura udon and the niku udon. Food was overall good and very fresh, and the waitstaff was very nice. I’ll note that the tempura in particular was very good. Super crispy and perfectly fried! That being said, we saw a big rat not their fault, there’s just a lot of rats in the neighborhood on the outside patio and it took about 45 minutes for our food to arrive. Without the wait and rat I’d give it a 5, but in our case… there was a rat and a long wait.
The outdoor seating is just adorable! And can we just look at this food. Tantan Udon Classic Garlic + Washugyu Curry Udon Classic Spicy. Chef's kiss.
Visited Williamsburg on a hot summer day, came across this restaurant which might have missed since the signage was not very prominent, but that seems to be the case for some Japanese restaurants, a hole in the wall with great food. Walking inside, it is bigger than I expected, with a backyard hosting couple of tents. We chose to sit inside on of the tents in the backyard, the weather was cooperating, not very hot with gentle breeze throughout the visit. Fried chicken Karaage was very juicy and tender, the spicy bean paste was an excellent companion to the chicken. The udon noodles was very chewy, which I love. The dipping broth was flavorful but not overwhelming, very nice to eat on a hot summer day. The price can be a bit on the expensive side, but that’s the case for most authentic Japanese restaurants. Overall recommend this place and would come again.
