Louie's Wine Dive is a fun place to go for great food! The price point is awesome for the quality that you're getting! Most everything can be made gluten free and they have dedicated gluten free fryers to reduce the risk of cross contamination! Louie's is my favorite place to go when we're in Des Moines!

With the switch to small plates, the menu changes and removals of long standing favorites Louie's had changed for the worse. I get that restaurants need to change and stay fresh but this move feels like a big step backwards.
Having said that the food was very good as always, it's also quite expensive for much less food.

The best gluten free options ever! Fried cheese curds, french fries, all things that a person with celiac normally does not get to enjoy. All of the food is delicious, and of course the wine and cocktails.

We came in on a Friday night around 8:30 for a girl's night dinner and were seated right away. The restaurant looks really nice, and everything is clean and styled well. It strikes a balance between stylish and dive-y really well. It's just as appropriate for grabbing a few cocktails with friends as it is for an anniversary or date night. Our waitress was attentive and answered all of our questions. Overall, our service was good. I ended up ordering an appetizer and two side, because they just sounded really good!
Crispy Pecan Brussels Sprouts - These were my favorite. They were crispy, fatty, and the candied pecans brought a sweetness to the dish that was appreciated. These have a little bit of a kick to them, and the overall flavor ended up reminding me a little bit of an Asian flavor profile. They were really good and I would order them again.
Truffle Potatoes - These were another slam dunk for me. The potatoes were cooked perfectly and the sauce was so yummy I wanted to drink it. If they put that sauce over pasta, I would be SO happy and SO fat.
Prosciutto Mac and Cheese - This was underwhelming at best. There was no cheese flavor to my pasta at all, and it could have easily been called a pasta salad and I wouldn't have known the difference. The prosciutto was not what I was expecting, and was more like little pieces of ham. Even with these pieces, the dish was extremely bland and flavorless. Thank goodness for the bread crumbs, because they at least brought some texture to the dish. I would pass on this one.
Carrot Cake - This cake comes out Whoopie Pie-style, with a créme anglaise and candied carrot garnish. The candied carrot was my favorite part of the dish, and I wish it had more! The crunch added a lot to the dish. The cream cheese icing was a little bit stronger on the cream cheese flavor than I prefer, and kind of overwhelmed the delicate carrot cake. Overall though, I enjoyed the cake and ate all of it.
Overall, I had a good experience and I would like to come back and try a few more items on their menu.

My boyfriend and I had our first date at Louies Wine Dive and this past Saturday we went back to celebrate our first date a year ago. The manager and our waitress; Kay, along with the entire staff made it so pleasant for us. They genuinely cared, reserved a perfect table for us with a bottle of wine and a written message I asked for, suggested wonderful items to try and we had a great conversation with Kay our entire meal. They made us feel important and helped make our night special. The food was great, the wine was perfect and the service was excellent!
