We went here on the spur of the moment after seeing signs for it on I-20, and we're so glad we did! It is an amazing place - one of the only windows into the hunter-gatherer world which existed millenia ago. For some reason, small hunter-gatherer tribes assembled by the thousands and built these mounds, one of which is immense. The guide was an incredibly knowledgeable archeologist who shared fascinating details about every aspect of the culture we can know at this remove. The movie and museum were superb as well. The hours we spent at this place were truly rich.

Some of the best earthen mounds still around. Drive or walk to the mounds and then climb and enjoy the view. Be sure to visit the welcome center to get info for the stops or you will miss a lot of the sights as many are not obvious. Bring a picnic lunch and enjoy a peaceful meal after your hike.

Good exhibit about both the archeological findings and their historical context. GREAT ranger tour (ca 45 minutes) on a trolley with lots of additional explanations. Good booklet for self-guided drive-through (“5 minutes”) or hiking tours (2-3 hours). While the full walk might not be as informative as the trolley tour, I recommend to at least do the climb to Bird Mountain (Mound A).

This is a great National Park, though a little off the beaten path. This is a great place to take your dog or your family! Take your kids on a picnic. Just don't do it in the summer! We felt like our dog was going to overheat, so we had to carry him most of the way around the trails. We really did enjoy the trails and the little Museum though. They have arrowheads and all kinds of artifacts chicken look at and take pictures of and the guy that is really nice and will tell you all about the property and how to get around. Also, it's on a bayou, so the scenery is really pretty. This might be a good place for a picnic and an umbrella to prevent you from getting too much sun.

OMG I recommend this especially for families. You can walk, drive, or take the shuttle to all the mounds. I recommend the shuttle because the guide is so knowledgeable. There are picnic tables so pack a lunch. Check website for special events.
