I love Chinese cuisine - both American and traditional styles. So, having tried countless restaurants, I'm pleased to say this is my favorite. Shanghai Tokyo ST is located on highway 1 near the University of Maryland, College Park. There are other restaurants, a walking trail, and metro-rail station nearby as well. Across the street on the same side of the highway is a convenient pay-to-park lot - it's pretty cheap in comparison to other parking lots in the DC Metro area. ST isn't huge, and offers a naturally lit, relaxed ambiance. The staff are quite friendly, and have offered some flavorful recommendations. I often go with friends so that we can eat family-style and I can get to taste as many of the dishes as possible. Last time, we had the Ma Po Tofu, Beef with Peppers, beef Chow Mein, Chicken Mei Fun, and Four Season Green Beans. Each were exquisite. The tofu was cooked well and lightly spicy as done in Sichuan. The green beans had a mix of spice, umami, salt, and pepper to give a well balanced profile. Both of the noodle dishes had tender meat and noodles NOT too saucy. Lastly, the beef with long peppers was spicy, yet well-seasoned. In addition to Chinese food, the restaurant also has Thai and Japanese cuisines as well. I've had both their curries and sushis before and they were also great. Overall, this place has some of the best Asian food I've ever had. I can't recommend ST enough.
Less than 8 hours ago, my husband and I agreed to access Grubhub to order food from Shanghai Tokyo Café in College Park Maryland. My husband chose the Roast Pork Mei Fun and we shared the pork gyoza 6 piece appetizer. I selected the chirashi bowl and 2 piece yellowtail sashimi, the ginger pieces I received enhanced the flavors of the food I ate. Both my husband and I enjoyed our food and I am humbly grateful to say that he paid for the food even though I keep an open mind to both paid professional critics reviewers writers and amateur professional critics reviewers writers.
ordered takeout and the service was pretty slow. we ordered a beef bento box and chicken drunken noodles. the drunken noodles did not taste like how they were supposed to at all. they were definitely spicy but besides that there was no flavor and especially no basil flavor which is what drunken noodle is known for. the beef bento box was average but nothing special. i wouldn’t come back here. the taro bubble tea with tapioca was good but not cold.
Great affordable sushi, pineapple fried rice and pad thai!
Very authentic with great service. You know a place is good when they have 2 menus listed. One in English and the other in Chinese.
I have never been impressed by Shanghai Tokyo Cafe. The interior looks alright, but the food and service is mediocre at best. I usually avoid coming here because the food isn’t great, rice is sometimes mushy or smells weird to the degree that I feel sick or throw up after eating. The service is also horrible. Every time I have come here, the cashiers gave me an attitude, even when THEY messed up my order. The last two times I ordered drinks, they never included the drink with the order, and when I brought it up they didn’t even apologize for forgetting and acted as if I caused them a huge inconvenience by asking for what I ordered. However, it was my most recent experience here that convinced me to never come here again. I ordered Honey Sesame Chicken from here recently and was horrified to find STAPLES in my food takeout! One was at the top of the food in plain sight - so I have no idea how whoever packaged this food missed this. There was another staple submerged in the sauce. This is absolutely unacceptable! At that point, I threw away the order. I have no idea how to submit a complaint against them for this I tried doing my own research and the PG County Health Dept. Website where you can file complaints was disorganized and difficult to navigate however if I did - I would file a complaint and report them in a heartbeat.
The Thai pineapple rice was very nice. Also tried their jasmine milk tea and it was pretty good. Good selection of dishes on the menu plus lots of specials on the board.
Large portion sizes, satisfied with everything, been here 3 times already!
