Shawnee Mission Park is the best park. So many things to do: lake stuff (kayak, canoe, SUP, sailing, beach, fishing) with no power boat insanity, disk golf, mountain biking, road biking, walking trail, archery, RC airplanes, picnic areas, playgrounds, etc. Bathrooms are clean and plentiful. Staff is friendly and helpful. Plenty of parking. Easy access off of interstate. Busy but never feels crowded. My only complaint is that they close the park occasionally for special events, so make sure you check before you drive out there. I love SMP!

5/27/18 Not meant for dogs with disabilities
My dog is a yellow lab, who had surgery as a puppy for bone spurs. She had calcium deposits in her bones. So if you don’t know what spurs are, they feel like shards of glass in her back legs that also make her over weight because exercise is limited. We took her to the dog beach today, and I was Absolutely appalled that we had to park and walk so far. With all of the land that they own, they should open up that gate and allow parking closer, for dogs with disabilities. Require a note from the vet- or whatever it takes. That long walk there and back, took all the pads off her feet. There was blood all over her, my car. She had to stop a dozen times because her legs were giving out. I ran To the top to try to get my car with a ramp but of course it’s locked for no good reason.
I am Ashamed of Shawnee mission lake. Our families spend all summer every summer out there. Fishing, boating, swimming.
There is so many dogs with disabilities and water therapy is great for their joints. I hope In the very near future- they do something about this. Because I wont Stop. Offer golf carts, you pay to take it and return it back. Something. Anything. You offer handicap parking, but a lot of good that does when it’s a mile hike up and down. Especially after their paws have softened up, your best solution is shredded mulch? Please.

We try to get over here to walk the trails at least once a week. There are so many trails, rocky & rugged with some difficulty to dirt & fairly easy going, paved paths that are wide perfect for biking or family walks. We don't but a lot of people mountain bike the trails. It also has a large lake where people constantly sailing, paddle boarding, kayaking, swimming etc. So glad it's close by so it's so easy to enjoy.

I gotta give this place 5 stars I live literally right next to it. It has a good size lake where you can take your canoe or kayak for a spin. It has mountain bike trails. They are very rocky so it's not for the faint of heart. They sometimes close them if it has rained a lot. You can get on the paved bike system and go all the way south to Olathe and up north to the Kansas river I think. Plenty of playgrounds for the kids and picnics areas for adults. There is even an off leash dog park where the dogs also have access to the lake. Great fun.

I love sm park. We mainly go for the dog park, which is great, but we went there to go fishing and had a lot of fun. It's a very nice place to hang out with the kiddos. Amenities include: a swimming beach, very large off leash dog park, canoe rentals, archery range (I think it's still there), large lake, endless amounts of open space, and shelters you can rent. There are restrooms throughout the park as well. It's nice
