ı had cooking class with chef Cassie, she is amazing, good teacher. She is teaching with joy. Thanks chef Cassie
Visited this store for the first time and I wasnt helped let alone greeted. Which is sad because another customer walked in behind me 3 minutes and was helped and greeted. As a chef who loves to cook I was first extremely excites about this store, unfortunately that excitement quickly changed as a walked throughout the store passed multiple employees and not a word or glance was given in my direction, so by the time I made my rounds in the store I decided to put back the 3 or 4 things I was going to buy. Long story short I will took my business and money elsewhere. Your store may have a vast variety of kitchen utensils but that doesnt matter if your customer service is that lack luster.
The staff was SO helpful. It was all more of an informative sales pitch as opposed to an aggressive, you must buy, sales approach. That combined with some awesome sales, ended up spending way more than I wanted, but got stuff I've been eating for years namely some amazing knives. I really wish the Seattle location had the cooking school the Portland location has!
I purchased a group cooking class for a family member to enjoy over the holidays. I thought this was would be fun experience but it turned out to be a disappointment. Half of the class was watching the instructor "cook" anyone can do that at home on TV and the group exercises were disorganized to the point that some of the food was burnt and was unusable in the end. One of the items made needed to "cool and set" so there was no sampling. It just sat on the table as the class ended. Not a good value at $75 dollars for 2 hours. But hey, we did get a one-day 10% off coupon to use in the store if you wanted to spend more. Store is nice but look elsewhere for classes.
They overcharge for everything and a lot of the stuff they sell isn't that great anyway. Employees are creepily cheerful or completely inattentive with no in between. Still, some of their stuff is great and you can often find cool things on sale. There are better places to buy kitchen stuff in Portland and online, but this will do in a pinch.
2017 cooking experience: Good, they let us take all the food home. It was an expensive class after all. 2018 cooking experience: So-so, they only let us take some food home. "You are not allowed to take chocolate brittle home", they said. Why? Because of some unknown policy... 2018 co-worker's cooking experience: Sad, they didn't let anyone take any food home. Why? Strict unknown policy = They just wanted food for themselves. Not good. Not generous. Very expensive. Will not go to cooking classes anymore.
I love this place, the staff is always super friendly and helpful. There is always a good deal to be found too! My favorite is a great selection of cookie cutters and colorful silicone spatulas. Super sad that the store is closing :
One thing I really want to do and need to add to my Schemer is a cooking class in Portland. This Sur La Table offers them, which is very convenient for me. I know there are other places like restaurants, but seeing their set up in back, it has looked like a lot of fun. The distracting thing would be to take the class while people are shopping. Besides the cooking classes, this store is great. We turn to here for gifts for friends, parents or ourselves. They have some fun dishware around and it is always great to peruse through the Le Crouse. The staff is knowledgeable and helpful, so turn to them if you have any questions!
Purchased a Wusthof Gourmet 18-piece Knife Block Set Oak that I treasured so much. It was sales and tax free in Portland, the amount paid for the set, can only buy me a Wusthof chef knife back in Malaysia. Also bought sharpening stones and knife bag. If I come back to Portland, will definitely visit Sur La Table again.
Everything you need for cooking and some good bargains in there
