My boyfriend and I came here during our D.C. visit last month and are sad to hear that it had been closed since Friday. As someone who grew up eating my mom’s home cooking of Burmese foods, my favorite dish from Thamee was mohingar. The flavors of the fish, lemongrass and spices in the soup were rich and flavorful. It was also authentic and tasted just like my mom’s cooking. The seared eggplant dish, beef curry, and white fungus salad were also my favorites. Wishing the owner and all the staff members at Thamee the best with future endeavors!!!
Food was generally good, but quantity was disappointing and it just didn’t live up to the hype. The vegetable fish curry was great - everything else was fine, but nothing to write home about. The presentation is definitely “casual” but the prices weren’t. The in-person menu is also different from what is currently available online, which threw us off.
Thamee is an absolute treat! From the delicious food to the wonderfully kind staff to the intentional manner in which they operate their business living wages, healthcare, etc, this restaurant is a true gem and should be seen as a pillar and example for the culinary community here in DC. I was so excited to learn of their re-launch as a fast casual restaurant with outdoor patio that I had to stop in for a taste of their soft opening. The Bago Club citrus forward was a refreshing treat after the steady heat of the day. The A Methar Hin beef curry with golden rice was so tasty, with a rich, complex flavor profile. I enjoyed eating and reading on their patio, where I was even able to close my.eyes and get lost in the various sounds of H St life from the alley to the main thoroughfare. This is a fantastic local spot, and I look forward to coming in again soon.
fifth trip to thamee and first time i’ve stopped eating for long enough to snap a photo. the mohingar - a rich, brothy, catfish noodle soup with a super satisfying fried wonton topping is the highlight of the mains, but it’s the smaller bites that really shine. don’t shy away from the tea leaf salad and my personal favorite, the white flower mushrooms, a textural delight. dine in available upstairs and on their patio. come hungry and come often.
This is a 4.5. They have some pretty impressive flavors among the dishes served. The tea leaf salad was the least enjoyable, but could be a new flavor profile that was beyond me. It's acidic and super bitter. I could almost get on board, but it was just too much. The deep fried shrimp and vegetables was very good. It was no ordinary batter. The pork with the tomato sause with pickled mango was unreal. It sounds unusual, but the flavor was amazing. The Naan was very good, but a tad pricey. The rice - well seasoned and accompanied the coconut curry very well. I would definitely come back.
Delicious meal and a pleasant experience here. The staff was kind and attentive, and it seemed like they put a lot of care in each of their dishes. I really loved the restaurant decor - true to the restaurant's Burmese identity and simple but not overdone. We ordered the tea leaf salad, coconut curry with mushroom, cauliflower & pickled mango, and the palata & scoops. I highly recommend all of them! Would love to come back for brunch. As a note - you may have to verify if certain dishes are vegan even if they're labeled that way on the menu ex. the coconut curry comes with egg. I only wish that there was a vegetarian version of the tea leaf salad :
Visit 1: The pickled tea leaf salad was delicious. The waitress shared that they ship the tea leaves from Burma and this is the only restaurant in the US you can get them at. I wish I had gotten x5 of them rather then splitting one amongst the three of us. The fiancee got the chicken coconut curry and she loved it. I tried the sauce as I am vegetarian and for me it was a little too sweet but I guess I am a bit more critical of food. It's also important to note I only tried the sauce, not the dish as a whole with the noodles, chicken, and onions. BFF got prawns and tomatoes. Didn't want to try but she loved it and had a very satisfied food face. I got the cauliflower and eggplant. One of two main vegetarian dishes. TBH it sucked. The eggplants were not cooked equally, some crunchy and some rubbery. The dish itself lacked seasoning and mostly tasted like tomatoes. I love tomatoes but it doesn't serve as enough flavor for the dish. In addition, it took around 7 minutes between when my fiancee and BFF got their dish and when I got my dish. They were half way done by the time mine arrived. This is why I felt forced to lower the stars. We ended the meal with one plate of the dessert of the day. I enjoyed it but i wish the bread was bigger. But my god, that buttery naan was yummy. Ice cream was quite interesting. Visit 2: Had the mushroom curry noodle soup. I enjoyed it but wish they offered it with tofu instead. The tea leaf salad tasted different and was very disappointing. Visit 3: The tea leaf salad was bitter. What happened to how good it tasted the first time around? I had the masala tofu platter and it was fantastic. The food seems to be really hit or miss.
We came for the food but stayed for both the food and the drinks. Every cocktails is as pretty as it is tasty. By the time we finished eating we were too full for dessert. The fish shrimp, Khao suew and meatballs were all particularly tasty. The only miss was the veggie fritters. We'll definitely be back.
Don't miss! Reasonable prices and so delicious! They didn't have prices available on board outside so we actually almost passed this place up. Glad we didn't! The mohinga Myanmar national dish is PHENOMENAL not an exaggeration. I cannot understand what all spices make it so amazing, but it was heaven. The rest of our food was also really good, great date night spot, waitstaff was attentive and helpful. A great spot. We didn't try drinks but I saw others, they looked good. They have a neat little vegetables w/sauce they bring you in the beginning no charge also was good.
Can I eat this everyday?? I hadn’t had Burmese food before but the pictures on UberEats looked so delicious, I had to try Thamee. My meal traveled well, smelled great, and tasted even better. I had to hide from my family to keep a bite to myself . They open on UberEats at 4:00 starting on Wednesday I think so plan accordingly. I also loved the packaging and the cool notes. You can tell this place has heart.
