Description

The first Arbutus Library began as the "Arbutus-Halethorpe Free Library" in 1948 when local residents started a library in the basement of the Arbutus Hardware store at 5417 East Drive. It was such a success that in the early 1950's it became a part of the Baltimore County Public Library system and moved into larger quarters over an A&P supermarket.

In 1962 the library moved to a more modern building at 1581 Sulphur Spring Road. It remained at that location until August 10, 2010 when the current $11 million library, community center and senior center opened at 855 Sulphur Spring Road.

The official opening of the 25,000 square foot LEED silver certified "Green Building" by Baltimore County Executive James T. Smith and other dignitaries took place on August 24, 2010.

Very nice library. A little outdated but provide a lot of good amenities like a cafe area with vending machines and a fireplace in one of the study rooms. They offer passport services as well. Good selection with friendly staff. Lots of computer resources as well
Very large children’s section of books and play area. My 2 year old loved it! Also love that my Baltimore City library card can be set up to borrow books from the county libraries too.
The Arbutus Branch Library is an indispensable resource. 3D printer, kids area, computers, videos and of course books. A fantastic facility with plenty of community events. Plenty of parking a a really nice staff. Last time I was at the library was for a red cross blood drive. There is so much going on! Swing by and check it out, if you don't go to the library they won't get funding.
Impressed with this library branch. Books were well organized and almost everything I was looking for was in the right place. They have a computer dedicated for lookups in the middle of the aisles, several desks for places to work or bring your laptop, and a few meeting rooms. While I was there, they were doing a community event where they asked elementary schoolers to help build Legos. Getting a library card is free, all you have to do is present your identification at the front desk. It took about 5 to 7 minutes to get set up and it was super easy. They also have vending machines for drinks and snacks.
Love Arbutus library branch. The librarians are helpful. When my daughter was looking for information for a school paper, she went to ask the librarian for recommended resources. The librarian reserved books for her to pick up, along with printing out information from the internet for further research. My kids love the extra programs. We wish there were more offered. Plus, I am so thankful for the drive up window I frequently use to pick up my reserved books.
First time. Very nice, helpful people, enjoyed the environment. Didn't have the book I wanted, but found another book that I checked out. Thank you.
The employees at this library always greet you warmly. They are happy to help you and don't seem to look at you as an inconvenience or interruption. They really go above and beyond!
I visited the Arbutus Branch Library to submit a passport application in February 2023. It was a very good experience. They were very kind and courteous, helping through the entire process. I recommend visiting for this purpose. The library itself was well cared for and clean as well.
I just wanted to share that I had a lovely experience at this library. I had made a passport appointment for me and my partner at the nearby post office but when I got there the clerk turned us away, stating she was simply to busy because she was the only one there. My partner called the library afterwards, explained our situation and asked if they could fit us in. They diligently worked hard to accommodate our last minute need and were polite, professional and courteous. Both the young woman at the front and our passport agent showed us genuine kindness and ensured all our documents were in order. I have told everyone how the librarians at this location are bad a$$ and saved the day!
Best, most helpful staff! Lovely place that has a number of excellent services including passport service. Always well used but there are enough computers so that there is no waiting. Always a nice experience.
