Balboa Island Museum & Historical Society

About

Our mission is to preserve the Island heritage and its sense of community.

Description

Balboa Island, with all its allure and charm, has been a favorite California location for locals and vacationers alike. Now residents and visitors can discover all sorts of interesting and fascinating facts about this magical Island by visiting the Balboa Island Museum & Historical Society. Visitors will be fascinated by the display of Island memorabilia, including classic photographs that depict the Island’s captivating history.
The Museum was founded in 2000 after local Pat Buderwitz had the idea of turning the old Fire Station into an Island Museum. Pat and a group of Island neighbors started meeting regularly and formed an organization, the Balboa Island Museum & Historical Society (BIMHS). On May 13, 2000, a reception was held at the Newport Beach Yacht Club to introduce the BIMHS to the Island residents. When the fire station option fell through, the BIMHS decided to rent a space until a more permanent location could be found. They moved into their first location across from the ferry during March of 2002.

In the spring of 2011, the Board of Directors made the decision to relocate the Museum to 331 Marine Avenue, becoming part of Balboa Island’s “Main Street.” This charming vintage cottage is the perfect site to showcase the Museum’s artifacts and it is the hope and desire of the committee that this location will also provide a meeting place for the local community. (Coincidentally, the new location is very close to the old Fire Station, their original chosen spot!)

Locals and visitors are welcome to check out the new location and learn a little bit of Balboa Island’s enchanting history.

A small but lovely museum exhibiting some history of Balboa island, glad that we stopped by and got to learn about the island’s past. They also got scavenger hunt, so fun! It’s right in the heart of the marine street, so don’t miss it when visit Balboa island!Visited onWeekendWait time10–30 minReservation recommendedNoPrice for adult entryFree
Small yet cute FREE museum with wonderfully charming staff! They have a nice gift shop but the museum section isn’t large. There was cool info about Balboa Island, Shirley Temple and more. You probably won’t spend more than 15 minutes in the museum. HOWEVER! I noticed an empty storefront down the street that said: Coming soon: The Balboa Island Historical Museum... so maybe they’re moving soon and will have more room! I never give FREE museums less than 4 stars, because anything they offer is gravy. Definitely check this out when strolling down the strip!
The guide explain everything you need to know about Balboa. Lots of History and gives you a hint of the places you need to visit there.
Staff is knowledgeable and more than friendly. Spoke with in older woman named Susan, who was very polite and informative. Merchandise that they sell in the shop is very neat. And a history of the islands had details I did not know of. Mostly that both John Wayne and Shirley Temple had homes there. Definitely a place to check out, learn something new, & meet a smiling face.

This place is fun place to visit and it’s free, although a bit scares on items and they try to get you to donate or buy something from the gift shop which only has cliche Knick knacks. The lady behind the counter told me someone paid the rentwhich I’m sure is very high for them for like 2 years. I imagine it’ll disappear after that time due to not being able to cover the high rent, so go see now while you can.
It has some interesting pictures and artifacts from earlier days on Balboa island. I definitely wouldn't drive here just for this, but it's worth a stop in if you have never seen it before. Not sure that I'd go back. I guess they work after donations mostly.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNoPrice for adult entryFree
Pay 0 to get in. Great history and momorabilia. If you do a treasure hunt you get a prize. free
Donations-suggested historical museum of early Balboa history and it's fascinating culture. Step away from the harbor for awhile and get inside to learn something you may not have about Balboa. Hands on exhibits encourage families to linger longer. We enjoyed putting a 500-piece puzzle of Balboa Island together! Friendly docents available to answer your questions make this a fabulous find.
really nice place to stop and spend time reading about the different aspects of history of Balboa and the surrounding area. This isn't just some rich beach resort, it has a rich history from its early days purchased as marshland through the golden era of movies when many stars called this area home
