Black Hills National Cemetery

Description

Black Hills National Cemetery is a United States National Cemetery in South Dakota, located three miles (5 km) southeast of Sturgis in Meade County. It encompasses, and as of the end of 2005, had 19,147 interments. Located at exit 34 of Interstate 90, it is administered by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, which also administers the nearby Fort Meade National Cemetery. It is one of three national cemeteries in South Dakota (the other two being Fort Meade and Hot Springs).HistoryThe area around the Black Hills Cemetery was originally inhabited by the Lakota Indians. French explorers went through the region in the 1740s, and Spain laid claim to the area in 1762 until it was acquired by the United States in the Louisiana Purchase of 1803. Fort Randall was established in 1856, and the 1861 establishment of Dakota Territory brought more settlers to the region, but it wasn't until gold was discovered in the Black Hills that the area was truly populated. Under the Treaty of Fort Laramie, the United States granted the land of the Black Hills to the Lakota, but there was no stopping the settlers from entering the region, which led to several conflicts. Most of the original interments in the cemetery were soldiers who fell in battles of the Indian Wars, but it has since been used to inter veterans from every major campaign the United States has been involved in. The cemetery was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2016.

Honestly, we took a wrong exit on the freeway and just happened to stumble upon this and boy were we all glad we did! What an amazing place! Its so beautiful and humbling to experience. Everyone should stop by and pay your respects when in the area.
This is a stunning landscape for honoring this nation's deceased veterans. It is the final resting place for many vets and this cemetery recognizes their service to the United States.
BEAUTIFUL final resting place and very well taken care as well for those who served this Country. I know because I have 5 FAMILY members and several friends that are at rest now and a few more family members that will be laid to rest there in the next couple of years. Blessing, love and honor to all those who have served this country without question. Thank You! Since the time I wrote this, we have laid my father in law to rest as well. Four family members are now at rest in this beautiful place for our vets and spouses. Sadly! My mother has passed and she will be laid to rest with my father, SFC Harvey Varns. The National Cemetery makes the final preparations so comforting and easy. What a Blessing all those who work to help with the final preparations at the National Cemetery truly are!
My brother is buried here. Marine Gunnery Sgt. Neil Therrell. RIP Gunney. Boris and I will see you on July 17th, good lord willing, the day of your passing.
Internment of my uncle Sgt Jerry Jensen, USA, infantryman Vietnam. Reverent and beautiful location. Professional staff and salute guard.
well done. much gratitude to those that are responsible.
My father died suddenly at the age of 61. We were all shocked and didn't know what to do. He always said he wanted to be buried in Sturgis to rest with other Veterans and because it was close to home, Sheridan, Wyoming and Miller South Dakota. Not knowing how to even go about doing all this, the employees were very helpful so that we could honor his wishes. We were able to set everything up with ease, and they even remembered me the next time I came back to visit him. That in itself was very heart warming that they remembered me even after all the veterans that they laid to rest after my dad. The view from is plot is AMAZING and I could not ask for a better place for him to rest. Thank you so much and I will visit as often as I can
Empathetic and sincerely helpful staff. It was a pleasure and honor arranging my father's internment. Thank you all for the wonderful ceremony and care.
This is a stunning area and local landscape for honoring this nation's deceased veterans. It is the final resting place for many vets, and it is a place that equalizes everybody who served, from private to general officer, and recognizes their service to the United States. Bravo.
Beautiful national cemetery! The hours on Google are for the administration office. The gates are open every day from sunrise to sunset.
