Description

The Cartoon Art Museum’s mission is to ignite imaginations and foster the next generation of visual storytellers by celebrating the history of cartoon art, its role in society, and its universal appeal.

Our vision is to be the premier destination to experience cartoon art in all its many forms from around the world, and a leader in providing insight into the process of creating it.

Founded in 1984, the Cartoon Art Museum has something for everyone—from comic strips, comic books and anime to political cartoons, graphic novels and underground comix. People of all ages can view original cartoon art at exhibitions and screenings, produce their own comics and animation at classes and workshops, research deeply into our collection and library, and mix and mingle with professional and aspiring cartoonists.

Our vision is to be the premier destination to experience cartoon art in all its many forms from around the world, and a leader in providing insight into the process of creating it.

Through exhibitions, artist appearances, and community outreach programs, the museum demonstrates how cartoon art entertains, communicates diversity, and champions self-expression.

Our History

In 1984, a group of cartoon art enthusiasts began organizing exhibitions by using artwork from their own collections. For several years, the Cartoon Art Museum was a “museum without walls,” setting up shows in local museums and corporate spaces. In 1987, with an endowment from Peanuts creator Charles M. Schulz, the museum established residence in the heart of San Francisco’s new vibrant art center, Yerba Buena Gardens.

In the museum’s 32-plus years of existence it has produced nearly 200 exhibitions and 30 publications celebrating and examining the diversity of cartoon art in animation, comics, graphic novels, zines, book illustration, and more.

Recently visited the Cartoon Art Museum located in Fisherman’s Wharf San Francisco, California. The Cartoon Art museum has some of the most incredible exhibits you’ll ever see. This is the ideal location for comic book needs, superhero fanatics, and cartoon aficionados. During my visit, the misusing was featuring a Batman exhibit which is free and absolutely amazing. The exhibit has official replicas and actually suits worn from the movies. As one of the most iconic superheroes ever invented, if you’re a Batman fan, you’ll be blown away by this exhibit. There is also an amazing Wonder Woman and Spider-Man replica costume available on display. There is also a lot of original storyboards and color images from some of our favorite original artists. This is a must see place.
This place is really friendly. As a tourist I paid a little bit more but there's a whole range of discounts if you're a resident of San Francisco, military veteran, children. There was beautiful art but more importantly this was designed to live in a community and had an entire reading room and space for moms and children to spread out and enjoy comics. And the space was being used I saw at least four moms with kids reading together. They had an all genders bathroom. There is a lovely space to learn and the bookstore had all of the supplies her heart could want as a child to draw comic books. Of comic art was on the walls with children's material, classical cartoons as well as emerging artists. If you enjoy comic books or you need something to do with the kids to calm down this is probably it.
Such a great experience! A small place with a few exhibitions and a reading room. Paradise for cartoon lovers. From history all the way to the “woke” creator. Video arts and a cute activity for kids. And the place is super clean with great friendly service. And a great price,10 dollars for adults and 6 for teens. We all loved it!Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNot surePrice for adult entry$6–10
The collection was really interesting and entertaining. The museum is small so it doesn't take long to go through the whole exhibit. The staff was nice and passionate about the vision of the museum. The gift shop is full of treasures, so many good books and art supplies!Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNoPrice for adult entry$6–10
It’s a small museum. Most of the artists represented in the front rooms are local and we didn’t find them too interesting. In the back is a fabulous exhibit of animation cells. Also, it’s easy to miss the small, but wonderful, Batman exhibit.
It wasn't quite what I had hoped to see. I had hoped for more original art on display. Maybe with all digital drawing, there isn't much to show, but surely lots of classic art still exists, doesn't it? It's also very small. They had a Wonder Woman exhibit happening. Again, a missed opportunity. It would have been nice to see a better retrospective of be Wonder Woman with original comics on display, etc. Happily, we paid a very discounted rate, so I didn't get ripped off. Instead, I left feeling like it was a wasted effort. The room of Batman stuff was moderately more interesting and impressive.
Great showcase of Wonder Woman comic and media art. Excellent presentation of Last Week Tonight art. Also excellent display of replica batman costumes.
The exhibit is pretty small, but lovingly set up, with attention to detail. I was there during the wonder woman exhibit, and it was very interesting and definitely worth it for fans of the franchise. There was an interactive Batman Quiz that gives you a small reward when you solve the mystery, which was very fun to do and helps take in more details of the exhibit
The cartoon museum was nice. It was very nice to see the actual sketches of cartoons and comics that we grew up watching and reading. It’s very small but very authentic, every corner meant something. I can't believe that everything was hand drawn and edited by a wipe-off pen. Few of Archie’s sketches were there it was nice to see dexter’s lab, the spider from James and giant peach, jack skeleton from the nightmare before Christmas , Sabrina, the Power Puff Girls. Nostalgia
My partner and I were going to skip going to this museum because of the previous Google reviews but I am so glad we checked it out. If you are a cartoon art fan, this is the place to be! It's free to visit the Batman Room and the museum store. When we visited, there was a game a riddle associated with the Batman Room. If you figured out the answer, you receive a prize - the prize we got was so cool, you will have to visit to find out what the prize is! The museum area is $10 USD. Don't let the size of the museum fool you, there are a ton of cartoon art things to see and learn about. They have exhibits from past to present-day artists. My favourite is the retro cartoon area! They have a nice reading area filled with cartoon books and comics - perfect for any age group. We spent about 1.5 hours in there. If we had more time, we would have done the other game in the museum area. This place is definitely a hidden gem in San Francisco!
