Charles Towne Landing

Description

Charles Towne Landing State Historic Site preserves the original site of the first permanent English settlement in Carolina. Originally opened in 1970 to commemorate South Carolina's tricentennial, this 664acre site is home to an exhibit hall, rental facility, a natural habitat zoo, ongoing archeological excavations, miles of trails, dozens of picnic tables, a replica tall ship, six fireable replica cannon, and much more.Living historyExperimental Crop GardenThe Experimental Crop Garden showcases crops planted by early colonists for food and profit. While offerings vary seasonally, sugarcane and indigo, two attempted cash crops, are frequently visible.AdventureAdventure is a replica of a ketch, a popular style of 17th-century cargo vessel. Similar ships carried commercial goods, foodstuffs, and even livestock between New York, Barbados, and everywhere in between. Renowned 20th century naval architect and historian William Avery Baker designed Adventure in 1969. The first Adventure served Charles Towne Landing from 1970 until 2004. The second Adventure was constructed in 2008 by Rockport Marine in Maine and sailed to Charles Towne Landing in October, 2008.Fortified areaThe Fortified Area of the site is bounded by a reconstructed palisade wall. Colonists constructed the original palisade wall to defend the young colony from a land-side attack from the Spanish, or their native allies. The Fortified Area also contains reconstructed earthwork fortifications and six replica cannon. The colonists mounted a battery of cannon facing the Ashley River, and a second battery defended Towne Creek (present day Old Towne Creek). Both the palisade wall and earthwork fortifications are both partially reconstructed on their archeological footprint.

The park is expensive to get in, but I understand how expensive it is to maintain a zoo so I see why. We started by going in the visitors center and it's a beautiful and large building. We went through the museum and then continued outside to the zoo. We saw very interesting animals. Then, we walked to the Adventure ship which is a very cool boat that you can walk on for free. We then walked back to the car and drove to Folly Beach. Overall, this park is one of the nicest parks I've been to. Restrooms: Plenty of bathrooms all around the park Dog-friendliness: Dogs are not allowed in the zoo
Lovely walk with great views, watch out for alligator signs will keep you alert! The zoo was fun for the kids and the store had some surprisingly comfortable shirts. Great place to spend the morning before it gets too hot.
Stopped in to learn Somme history of Charles Towne Landing. Nice little museum to walk through. If you want to tour the grounds, need to purchase a ticket; you can also rent bikes if you want to go faster than your feet. Reduced the rating by one star because the history tour signs were opposite of the painted footprints on the paths. Made it confusing.
12$ per person. We did the historic trail and the zoo. The trail is cool, but not like amazing. The section of the trail where the weddings takes place is really pretty with the oak trees and spanish moss. The zoo has some cool animals like puma, black bear, otters, etc. In short, the place is good for a nice walk but not as pretty as some of the gardens around.
Genuinely one of my favorite spots in Charleston. It’s a gorgeous scenic walk, with a lovely little zoo full of some animals you don’t typically see as well as familiar favorites. I didn’t take many pictures because there’s so much to take all in! There’s a very nice gift shop as well.
Absolutely incredible! This well-maintained historic site provides information and immersive experiences to better understand the earliest settlement in South Carolina. We learned so much and enjoyed visiting the beautiful grounds with oak trees that predate the US Constitution. The museum is wonderfully designed with artifacts recovered from the settlement. Our family enjoyed the interactive videos along the trail, and meeting some of the actors during our visit!! Restrooms: Clean and maintained Picnic area: Several picnic areas in the shade
There is an animal zoo eagle, bear, otters, puma, bison, elk, red wolf. Great historical trail. Can easily spend an upwards of three hours exploring! Great views! Very cool spot! I paid $12.00 for daily admission! The staff was very helpful when I bought my ticket! The explained the History Trail and the animal zoo! When I got to zoo most animals were sleeping but I had no idea of this zoo until I arrived and staff told me! They had a great selection of animals! I was hoping to see Puma but it was hiding. I was able to see Black Bear though! The park was in immaculate condition. It was cared for! There were so many things to do! They offered golf cart shuttles and you could rent bikes! There was plenty of parking available! If one lived in area you could buy a year pass for $99.00. There were people running on roads because the complex is about 80 acres. The views were great with benches every where to sit and admire views. There were plenty of restrooms available. You could really spend all day there and even though it was hot there were plenty of quiet spots to escape the heat! I was at the park for over 3 hours and I feel like I could easily go back because I was not able to see everything! Best value if you lived in the area was buying the annual pass. It was really cool to see the first English settlement that dates back to the late 1600s. This park has so much history and so much to do! I will go back next time I’m in Charleston because it was cheap, very nice, and very entertaining! When you first enter the park you do not realize how big it really is. If you go there plan to spend at least 5 hours there! Bring a lunch and have a picnic and bring plenty of water!
We were surprised to find this awesome park. Our state park pass worked for us to come in. And there's so much to see and learn! Loved see the animals and talking to the park rangers
Amazing place to visit and get a good walk in, absolutely breathtaking areas throughout. I visited with my wife and kids which the kids wore out quick. So we only were able to see about 1/2 the campus. Late Feb and almost nobody on-site was great. If you are near take a visit to Charles Towne Landing.
This is a large, beautiful park with tons of history. Multiple walking paths with great scenery. Staff was friendly. Recommend listening to the audio-tour as you walk through the park. Historical recreations were interesting, educational and well maintained. Enjoyed the small zoo as well. When we went, there were archeological digs you could visit at designated times. Took about 4 or 5 hours to see everything, including the zoo. Very enjoyable experience overall.
