COMAL is a gathering place located in the heart of Berkeley’s bustling Arts District, one block north of the Downtown Berkeley BART Station. The restaurant is housed in a single story building (circa 1927) built of board-formed concrete and features a stunning rear patio with a full bar, covered dining area and al fresco beer garden.
Our food and drink menus are designed for sharing, highlighted by Platos Fuertes such as rotisserie chicken or wood-grilled whole fish and various masa-based antojitos. Executive Chef Matt Gandin, formerly of San Francisco’s Delfina, creates earthy, modern interpretations of dishes from various regions of Mexico, with an emphasis on the southern state of Oaxaca and neighboring coastal regions.
We offer a selection of “all-Mexican” craft cocktails that are “delicious, not precious”. We also feature seasonal house-made sangritas paired with our curated selection of agave spirits (including tequila, mezcal, sotol and bacanora), a variety of aqua frescas and ten beers and two wines on tap.
Please note that we apply a 20% service charge in lieu of a tip to all checks. Long overdue increases to the minimum wage on both state and local levels have prompted us to move to a new model of compensation that will be sustainable and fair in the long run for our entire staff, especially if minimum wage continues to rise. Our previous compensation structure (which was similar to virtually every other restaurant in the Bay Area and beyond) was such that the only people seeing raises from recent minimum wage increases were service staff who were already at the top of our pay scale when tips were factored in.
