Finger Lakes Boating Museum

About

Dedicated to preserving the rich history of Boating and Boat building in the Finger Lakes and creating an educational environment to learn these skills.

Description

In 1996 a small group of dedicated antique boating enthusiasts, motivated in part by a common concern over the rapidly dwindling population of locally-built wooden boats, committed to establishing a museum that would preserve the boating heritage of the Finger Lakes Region of New York State. The museum founders, all active in the "antique boat world," felt that a museum focusing on the impact that recreational and commercial boating had on the development of the lakes and tourism in the Finger Lakes Region would increase appreciation and awareness as well as help preserve these vintage craft. The following year a provisional charter was granted by the New York State Department of Education for the newly-formed Finger Lakes Boating Museum. As word of this project has spread, many like-minded people have joined the effort. Museum membership has expanded to over 300. A steady stream of vintage boats and related objects have been offered for donation, and the Museum Collection has now grown to more than 115 boats built by many of the 40+ commercial builders identified to date as having built boats throughout the Finger Lakes Region during the last century.

The Collection includes canoes, rowboats, row outboards, outboard runabouts, inboards, iceboats and sailboats; as well as many related artifacts and ephemera. Thanks to the generous efforts of a small army of volunteers, we have managed to restore several of our boats to near-original condition, field numerous shows and exhibits, conduct workshops on boat building and boat restoration techniques, publish quarterly newsletters and many articles on the boating history of the Finger Lakes region, and provide assistance with countless research requests. On February 28th of 2014, the Finger Lakes Boating Museum took possession of the former Taylor Wine Company buildings at 8231 Pleasant Valley Rd, just outside of the village of Hammondsport. Since taking over, a crew of entirely volunteers have worked tirelessly to restore the main building and put together the exhibits that are on display currently.

Really enjoyed this museum. Beautiful boats that were crafted in the Finger Lakes Region. You can even take a ride on a ferry boat that I saw them rebuilding and converting to EV a few years ago. The Pat II ferry boat ride on Keuka Lake is highly recommended.Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNoPrice for adult entry$6–10
This museum was a lot better than I expected! Tons more to see than I originally thought. The old wooden boats were great to learn about. Seeing the old wine cellar was fascinating. They had two kids room with fun activities to occupy the kids. The staff were really friendly snd very helpful. I highly recommend this place to visit when in the Finger Lakes area.
The FLBM has an awesome collection of wooden boats, everything from canoes to speed boats, lake cruisers and launches. Most of the boats were produced by manufacturers located in the finger lakes region, e.g. Penn Yan. The Museum is actually in one of the buildings of the now defunct Taylor Wines. The boats and related items are displayed on the 2nd and 3rd floors. The ground floor is where the Taylor barrel room and tasting rooms are located. Some basically two museums for the price of one.
Well worth the visit. Found out about this museum from the innkeeper at our B&B Pleasant Valley Inn and it was much better than we expected. Does a good job of presenting the history of boat-building in the Finger Lakes Region and has examples of many of the boats. The volunteers working there were very nice and knowledgeable.
Went there with a friend for a class on outboard motors. Class was not what we expected, but nonetheless it was fantastic and we learned what we hoped for. We also toured the museum and found it to be fantastic. It is a remodel of Taylor wines headquarters and done very well. Several pieces on display and stories to go with them. Three floors of displays plus you can go in the shop were they are rebuilding boats of the area. A beautiful treasure of history. Hammondsport seems like a cool little town to visit too probably better in warmer months They have tours on the water and plenty of places to eat.
Great museum with lots of boats on display. They offer classes on building boats. Fun for the whole family! If you like boating and being on the water you will definitely want to visit this museum.
Great little museum. Good for a visit if you're in the Hammondsport area at the bottom of Keuka Lake. Lots of historic designs well restored. I think I found the boat I want but I don't think I could afford the Fay and Bowen!
Beautiful place. Everyone was so friendly and kind. The history was just amazing. The guides gave us information on other museums. Anyone that loves wooden boats would enjoy this great place!!Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNot surePrice for adult entry$6–10
