This museum should be visited along with the Gerrit Smith Estate which is just down the street. The National Abolition Hall of Fame is located on the upper floor of the Smithfield Community Center, a historic building where Gerrit Smith invited his fellow abolitionists to gather and plan their fight to free the slaves. There is parking in the lot, and a suggested fee of $5 per adult. There is a short introductory video and then a walk upstairs to see the displays. I didn't see a elevator but I didn't ask either. The displays are mostly banners, one each for all the HoF inductees. The staff was friendly and knowledgeable. We spent about about 30 minutes, a bit hurried as there was a large group coming along.
A spot of tremendously important history located right here in the small hamlet of Peterboro, aka Smithfield in Central New York. It is a free museum with a self guided tour. A voluntary donation is appreciated and needed for the amazing restoration work happening at the Gerrit Smith Estate properties within walking distance from the museum. With arrangement, a Docent can meet you and your party to talk through the history and answer questions that likely will come up about this dark period in American history. The men and women that took a stand are finally celebrated in the way other great Americans are. Do yourself a favor… take a trip to this beautiful, special place to learn about Gerrit Smith and all those involved in this country’s forgotten timeframe… The Abolitionist Movement.
Know your history America! Stop by and get your head exploded by truth bombs in an all out knowledge campaign. Seriously though, be sure to check out this museum, it is a hidden jewel of Upstate N.Y.
Local history, state site. Worth a trip. A few items displayed were not completely accurate, but a great deal of work went into the collection
Great exhibits and the civil war days in June are a lot of fun.
