Freedom Riders National Monument

About

This is the official Facebook Page of Freedom Riders National Monument.

Description

In 1961, a small interracial band of “Freedom Riders” challenged discriminatory laws requiring separation of the races in interstate travel. They were viciously attacked by white supremacists, who firebombed the bus. Images of the attack appeared in hundreds of newspapers, shocking the American public and spurring the Federal Government to issue regulations banning segregation in interstate travel.

Very powerful historical site. Sadly the town has fallen into an economically depressed state. The old town charm is enshrined in the historical buildings around the site. If you want to get off the beaten path and learn some significant civil rights history, make sure you check out this National Monument.Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitPrice for adult entryFree
This is a part of America's Civil Rights history. The bus station does need renovation. BUT, the story of the Freedom Riders is told outside next to the mural. Thomas Odom took me inside the bus station and discussed some of the future renovation plans.Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNoPrice for adult entryFree
Great start to the newer Freedom Riders National Monument. The visitor center was closed Thursday visit but is open Friday- Sunday. The interpretive panels and mural give a great introduction to the Freedom Riders experience. There is a small information kiosk at the chamber and visitors center to get your passport stamp and Jr. Ranger books/ badges for the kids. Worth a visit when in the area.
Not at all what I was expecting. Information is just printed on the outside wall of a building. Never really opened or closed. If you want a stamp for your National Park Passport book, you might be able to get one at the Chamber of Commerce, but it was closed. Very disappointing because we drove out of the way to get the stamp.Visited onWeekend
It's one mural, but the history and the significance of what happened is with a visit, from everyone.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNoPrice for adult entryFree
A lot of great information. Enjoyed talking to the two Park Rangers that were working. Will be excited to see when they have the old Greyhound Bus Depot finished.Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNoPrice for adult entryFree
Really glad we stopped here. The mural and the moment by moment timeline was super cool. It is a quiet area and its easy to park alongside the sidewalk. We spent about 30 minutes reading through everything, but we really took our time with the kids! Absolutely worth the visit.
Visitor center still closed, but the mural is accessible and there are great interpretive signs up. There is also a speaker under the historical marker on the sidewalk that plays audio of one of the freedom riders describing the day.
Very well done! Moved me to tears. The only exhibit right now is in the alley where the attacks started, the story told in a very clear timeline with fantastic pictures. Read every word! There may be more to come inside the old bus station, but so far, it's empty. Anniston itself also has some really beautiful architecture as well.
Loved seeing the bus painted on the wall and reading the story of what happened. However, the visitor center was closed, even though the NPS app said it was open.
