The Georgetown University Space Initiative (GUSI) is an entirely student-run organization dedicated to the following missions:
1. GUSI seeks to create a community of students, alumni, and professors who are intrinsically interested in and enthusiastic about space affairs. Through GUSI, Georgetown-related individuals will have the opportunity to discuss topics such as the role of space in security, the future of robotic planetary exploration, and the arguments for the continuation of human spaceflight with other students similarly interested in space. GUSI will create a network of Georgetown University alumni in space-related positions to aid current Georgetown University students in achieving internships during their undergraduate education and professional positions after graduation in the space community.
2. GUSI will create a regular schedule of professional guest speakers who will address GUSI and other interested Georgetown University students on space-related topics.
3. GUSI believes that space has and will continue to play an increasingly prominent role in the life of the common individual as private companies increase the commonality of space travel and expand the capacity for human beings to travel farther and faster throughout our solar system and beyond. Future leaders in the public and private sectors must be prepared to deal with space-related threats and opportunities as they pertain to national security, economic competitiveness, and scientific expansion. Georgetown University lacks sufficient opportunities for students to learn about space in an academic setting at the date of this brief’s authorship. A key tenant of GUSI will therefore involve lobbying Georgetown University faculty and leadership in the Walsh School of Foreign Service, the McDonough School of Business, and the College for increased academic representation of space in the respective curricula to ensure Georgetown University’s ability to prepare its students for future leadership positions.
4. GUSI understands the power of learning opportunities outside of the classroom, of which GUSI’s first will be launching a high-altitude balloon into space.
