Glen Island Park

Description

Glen Island Park is a 105acre park, located on Glen Island, on the Long Island Sound, New York. The park is owned and operated by Westchester County and shares the island with a privately operated but county-owned entertainment facility, the Glen Island Harbour Club (formerly the Glen Island Casino). Westchester County residency is required for admission.HistoryStarin's Glen IslandIn 1879, former U.S. Congressman John H. Starin bought Glen Island and four nearby islands. He gave Glen Island its name and converted the islands into a summer resort for city dwellers that has been called "the first theme park". The islands were connected by causeways and piers, and each island featured a different international theme. Steamships transported visitors from New York City to the park. The park, which opened in 1881, attracted thousands of people daily, included among its attractions a bathing beach, a natural history museum, a zoo, a German beer garden and castle, musical entertainment, and a Chinese pagoda. In 1923, Westchester County acquired the site, which is now a public recreational park.

The park didn’t disappoint, from the spacious grounds to picnic; the beach which we didn’t truly prepare for to the playgrounds for the children, it was truly a Memorial Day well spent. Oh, did I mention the castle and placement of cannons. I was a good time.
We visited the park last weekend- August 13, 2022. The parking was $10 per car. It was a nice pleasant Saturday. the park was not crowded. There were lots of families having get togethers in the reserved picnic areas. The water was calm which was expected as it is bay/ Long Island Sound. There were some people fishing. I saw only one person caught a small fish. Bathroom were decent/ ok. The food at the store was mediocre and cold. I guess they made the food in the morning and then served for lunch. The fries, hot dog and chicken all were at room temps. The park is big but we kind of stayed around the water. It has some biking and hiking trails. Be aware of the flies / some insects as they bit me and my husband.
I’ve been going to Glen Island for the longest time now, and I love it. They have something for everyone. Parks, walkways, grills, seating areas, volleyball nets, and a beach. It really is a nice place to visit during the warmer times of the year as it does get windy near the water.
Beautiful place to go for a walk, jog, bbq, picnic, take in scenic views, etc.. They have a few playgrounds and a Harbour Club for special events. Had the privilege of meeting Trini, the park's Foreman. Nicest guy ever!! Definitely going back!
Went off-peak season March to this part & it was absolutely WONDERFUL! It was chilly & foggy, but still gorgeous & very family-friendly… a park, plenty of lunch tables & grills, a castle, and a beautiful view.
This park is really interesting. You have to pay to enter starting $5 . You can found Nice views around. The only thing if you want to swimming you have to pay $4 person. There are many amenities in the park. For BBQ you have to make a reservation.
One of the most amazing park in New Rochelle, westchester county. The park is in island surrounded by water body. Feel amazing. I like to come back visiting this place again. Park entrance cost you $10 per car but if you are the law enforcement officer, show you badge and they will charge you only $5. It has an amazing sea beach and will cost you $4 per adult, age 5-11 $3 and under 5 years old free. The beach is currently close and will open for service in next summer.
This nook of New Rochelle right on the Long Island Sound is beautiful and peaceful. The park is a good size and perfect for walking your dog or exercising. There is parking but on busy days it is reserved for Westchester County residents.
Did not know this existed. I have to say. This is one of the best park I have been in for the last 4 years. Hidden Gem!!!
Great atmosphere, for every kinds of events. Went with a group colleague for a day of barbecue and enjoying the outdoors. This place checked all the box’s when it came to accessibility..
