Holy Rood Cemetery

Description

Holy Rood Cemetery is located at 2126 Wisconsin Avenue NW at the southern end of the Glover Park neighborhood of Washington, D.C. It stands at one of the highest elevations in Washington, D.C. and has memorable views. Holy Rood Cemetery contains approximately 7,000 graves, including as many as 1,000 free and enslaved African Americans, and may be the best-documented slave burial ground in the District of Columbia. At the western edge of the cemetery is the grave of Joseph Nevitt, a veteran of the American Revolution.Originally named Trinity Church Upper Grave Yard, the cemetery was established by Holy Trinity Catholic Church in 1832, and enlarged between 1850 and 1870. The cemetery walls were torn down in 1901 and new ones erected, and a large number of trees cut down to prevent roots from dislocating memorials and limbs from damaging monuments during storms. The cemetery was active from the mid-nineteenth century into the early twentieth century, and a few burials took place as late as the 1990s.The cemetery is owned by Georgetown University. In the 1980s, the university explored the possibility of disinterring the bodies buried there so that the land could be put to other uses, but was blocked by a legal action brought by the remaining holders of burial rights. The cemetery reflects years of disuse and neglect. Many of the tombstones are toppled, damaged or overgrown, and grass grows up through large cracks in the asphalt walkway leading through it.

Holy Rood Cemetery is a 1832 small cemetery on a hill in Glover Park north of Georgetown. It started out as a church's cemetery and is now owned by Georgetown University. The gate is open during the day for those who want to pay their respects and/or take a stroll. The gravestones come in all shapes and sizes. Some are very old like that of Joseph Nevitt, an American Revolutionary War veteran, and others are clearly newer. There's a small mausoleum on the edge of the cemetery. Since it's on a hill, views of the Washington Monument and the newly constructed Trader Joe's can be seen from the cemetery.
I spent many, many hours jogging through Holy Rood Cemetery, which, I believe is the burying ground for the Diocese of Georgetown University. I have visited a small cemetery hidden inside Georgetown University. The graves are squat, dark brown crosses, marked only with a name, such as Brother John or Sister Mary. They are hidden inside a brick enclosure, but, you can see the graves through the 'sometimes' locked entrance gate. What bothered me was that I noticed that some of the residents of the townhouses to the north of Holy Rood Cemetery had used some headstones as walking or patio pavers. I called the Diocese office and was told that they would look into it. There is one grave which states, "Born In Georgetown, Maryland. Died In Georgetown, D.C."
This cemetery has a lot of character. It has some really cool features such as large tombstones and a large dip in the ground.
I have a view of it from my apartment. It is quiet and contemplative.
Spooky and in a shocking state of disrepair, but full of character because of it!
The only place in Glover Park where people are dying to get into.
Best place for 4th of July
