Description

From Wikipedia:
Oak Hill Cemetery is a historic 22-acre (8.9 ha) cemetery located in the Georgetown neighborhood of Washington, D.C., in the United States. It was founded in 1848 and completed in 1853, and is a prime example of a garden cemetery. A large number of famous politicians, business people, military people, diplomats, and philanthropists are buried at Oak Hill, and the cemetery has a number of Victorian-style memorials and monuments. Oak Hill has two structures which are listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Oak Hill Cemetery Chapel and the Van Ness Mausoleum.

Oak Hill began in 1848 as part of the rural cemetery movement, directly inspired by the success of Mount Auburn Cemetery, when William Wilson Corcoran (also founder of the Corcoran Gallery of Art) purchased 15 acres (6.1 ha) of land. He then organized the Cemetery Company to oversee Oak Hill; it was incorporated by act of Congress on March 3, 1849.

Oak Hill's chapel was built in 1849 by noted architect James Renwick, who also designed the Smithsonian Institution's Castle on Washington Mall and St. Patrick's Cathedral, New York. His one story rectangular chapel measures 23 by 41 feet (7×12 m) and sits on the cemetery's highest ridge. It is built of black granite, in Gothic Revival style, with exterior trim in the same red Seneca sandstone used for the Castle.

By 1851, landscape designer Captain George F. de la Roche finished laying out the winding paths and terraces descending into Rock Creek valley. When initial construction was completed in 1853, Corcoran had spent over $55,000 on the cemetery's landscaping and architecture.

Mission

The Oak Hill Cemetery Historic Preservation Foundation's mission is to preserve the publicly accessible Oak Hill Cemetery, a nineteenth century romantic garden park cemetery, its historic interment sites, structures, and records, and to support its functions and activities.

A beautiful cemetery with graves and mausolea going back a couple centuries. Fairly walkable, but some paths are sloping and have loose gravel, so might be a challenge for those with mobility issues. If you’re lucky like we were, you might see some of the deer that live in the cemetery!
Oak Hill has hundreds of years of history and beauty located in historic Georgetown, next to Rock Creek. There aren't many more beautiful, well maintained places I've seen to rest loved ones in peace. It's a true sanctuary.
Oak Hill Cemetery is a historic cemetery on a hill along Rock Creek Park in Georgetown in NW DC. The cemetery itself is stunning. On roving green hills, the scenery with the gravestones is stunning. Many of the gravestones are monuments and striking. There are a few larger burial areas on the premise as well as benches to sit and enjoy the scenery. There's a little garden as well as benches under a stone bridge. There's also a beautiful chapel designed by renowned James Renwick. There are more strict rules at the cemetery. You can't take professional photos nor bring in pets, bikes, etc. There are many famous DC icons buried here including Katharine Graham, the former publisher of The Washington Post.
Beautiful and serene. Of all the nice places, this was the only one good enough for my dear mother. Peaceful, cool breeze, and quietly away from major highways keeps the noise down. Check out Dial Murray Funeral home for information on purchasing lots at $1000 each, perceptual graveyard.
This cemetery is beautiful. I came here to take a walk and look at the old tombstones.
Put headphones in with classical music of death and you are in a true rural cemetery.
This is a DC hidden gem. One of the most beautiful cemetery’s I have seen, with rolling hills and pathways up and down them. A notable grave is that of William Thos. Carroll. Lincoln’s 11y/o son, Willie, was temporarily laid there after he died in 1862. The president reportedly visited and even took the boy out of his casket there to mourn. George Saunders wrote a book loosely based on this, called Lincoln in the Bardo. Anyway, this gravestone is one that is closest to the river/highway in the back of the cemetery to the left corner.
Beautiful to behold. Our ancestors knew how to design and build a graveyard. Now you no longer want to visit the deceased but get in and get out.
My folks were buried there in 1982. I grew up in DC, and of all the places I have ever been, anywhere, Oak Hill is the most lovely little world all unto itself, overlooking the Parkway. History, nature, architecture, gardens, statues, all the markers, with all their stories, and above all else, beauty and peace. Please respect this wonderful, special place.
Idyllic cemetery enabling reflection on the finiteness of life
