Gym and pool facility open to authorized patrons (active duty personnel, reservists, retirees, eligible family members & DoD Civilians) with base access. Contractors and retired DoD Civilians are NOT eligible to use the gym & pool facilities. There is 100% ID check.

Federal Holidays: Open 9: a.m. to 5 p.m. (closed Thanksgiving & Christmas Day).



"Located on Taylor Drive not Cushing Street on Naval Station Newport and open for all authorized patrons 100% ID check, Active Duty personnel, Reservists, Retirees, Dependents 16 and over, Veterans 100% disabled and DoD civilians. Contractors, Retired DoD civilians & Veterans who are not 100% disabled are NOT allowed to use fitness center. The gym itself is great. Good lineup of equipment and good quantity of it. You shouldn't have too much trouble using what you need. The MWR staff however.... Between the gym and the auto skills center, I don't think I've ever, in my two decades plus of active duty, seen MWR staff put so much effort into yelling at and micromanaging the patrons before in my life. The lady running the auto skills center would make even the most extreme helicopter mom look down right apathetic. The gym staff spends more time yelling at people for even the most ridiculous "infractions". I was lifting 4 inches into the 10 ft wide walkway and was told to move back into the weight zone which was full btw. I was yelled at for not using collars on the Smith machine. Please explain to me how the plates can possibly fall off? The staff walks around the gym like boot camp drill instructors, yelling at anyone and everyone for even the most benign things. Meanwhile, the air conditioning might as well not even be on because it's 80 degrees with 90 percent humidity. The facilities are great but the nanny state mentality is the worst I've ever seen. I never want to go back to Rhode Island simply because of this. MWR director, if you seeing this, tell your staff to take a couple steps back please. I'm too old to be mom and popped like this and my experience with MWR on this base was miserable simply because of the overbearing staff.
Nice gym, lots of equipment, friendly staff. They only issue I have is why isn't this accessable 24/7 with a CAC Card like many other DOD Fitness Facilities? It would certainly ease that congestion and reduce staying burdens.
Lots of great fitness classes and the teachers are fabulous! The gym has a sauna, which is lovely. Excellent equipment too, lots of options at the gym.
Fantastic gym. Great staff. Needs a decline bench machine and a hip thrust machine.
Great gym. Missing a seated calf raise and decent Smith machines, but it is always clean and smells good. Machines are new and very high quality. Avoid 4-6pm on weekdays if you want to miss the rush. Easily the best DoD gym I've lifted in.
Busy at peak times but tons of equipment for everyone. Don't miss the view from the second floor to enjoy the ocean during your workout.
Its the best in this Area , various of machines, lovely stuff, some times getting too crowded specially afternoon
The best Base gym of all of the Navy Bases I've ever seen. And I have been to over 25 bases.
Rating it below average because their fitness rooms aren’t available for use when classes aren’t in session. Of all the military gyms I’ve been too this is the first one that locks them when classes aren’t in session. This lack of accessibility greatly inhibits the ability to cross train/do diverse functional fitness exercises or even ride a cycling specific bike. Instead people only have the option to try to create a circuit on the open weights floor and constantly cross in front of other people or just not get your workout done. Even a normal civilian gym always has a fitness room available for use when classes aren’t in session.
A modern fitness facility. Locker room is large. The exercise areas have a great variety of machines and weights. It is difficult to workout during peak hours. The indoor track is small. 20.25 laps is the 1.5 mile run.
