Avoid if possible due to inconsistent and sometimes reprehensible nursing practices. TL;DR: one of the nurses told me that I was capable of things I was not and did not take my physical concerns seriously even though I was unable to breathe and in an incredible amount of pain. Additionally, one of the nurses possibly the same one lied to the person I came with, communicating that I was in no pain, despite the fact I was in a very high amount of pain before being discharged. I have PTSD due to medical issues and procedures, which is well-documented and was something that I needed to cope with throughout my procedure. My doctor was fantastic, but she is not a North Memorial-specific doctor AFAIK as she practices in clinic with a different organization. A couple of the nurses did their best to help me before and during the procedure. After my procedure, which was completed with local anesthesia, and after which I experienced my second panic attack of the day, there was a nurse whose first name starts with D and I'll continue to refer to her as such who made my experience go from helpful but difficult to traumatic. For those who don't have PTSD, it might be hard to understand what people who do go through. This is not, however, an excuse for a practicing nurse who needs to be able to react to situations that are outside of her capabilities by pulling in someone who is. D made every effort to rush me out of the surgery center as quickly as possible. When I could not breathe and was coughing and nearly vomiting from the condition I was in, she handed me a bag and gave me a small amount of water while she began reading me my discharge notes which I was not in any condition to understand or acknowledge. Having been in recovery for less than 10 minutes, all while going through this mentally and physically strenuous episode, she reiterated that I needed to get dressed and leave. D did not try to bring in someone who could assist, such as a supervisor or more experienced nurse, nor did she show a shred of compassion or will to treat me any differently than a 5 year old who simply "doesn't wanna." For example, she told me that I needed to calm down and that I was absolutely able to calm down--and no, I was not able to calm down as quickly as she was demanding. I should also mention that severe pain and inability to breathe are *severe call-your-doctor-now symptoms* that should be watched out for after my procedure which makes D's reaction even worse. At one point, I asked her if she had PTSD so that I could understand if she understands what I'm going through to which she responded "We're not talking about me." I had to ask for her name more than 3 times before she would give it to me. Eventually she stormed out and sent another nurse in to read me my discharge instructions. Not only was it taking me a little bit to regulate, but I was also experiencing an excruciating amount of pain. Despite this, they communicated to the person I was with that I was in "no pain" so that person was shocked when they saw the condition I was when I was brought out of the recovery area. All in all, the nursing staff clearly has inconsistent training and levels of compassion + there aren't policies in place that help the staff respond to situations they can't handle themselves. Horrid experience that has set my mental health recovery back by several months. I've gone to North Memorial clinics and hospitals for years, and while my results have varied, they've never been so absolutely horrible as my experience in this specific place. I can't believe they allow nurses like this to practice.
