As for the location, it was excellent. In terms of the staff, they miss the mark big time. The kitchen manager, Ryan, was extremely rude and late for just about every meal. I've got nothing against mazama, as a business entity so to speak, but Ryan was just a bit much. He gets drunk every night and starts hitting on every woman in sight. Keep your eyes on your girl if you choose to visit mazama and prepare for burnt toast and leftover eggs in a box.
Attended a wedding here. The view and peace at the foot of the mountain are beautiful and it's a nice facility that is well cared for and staffed. The one caution I would raise is that it's difficult for some older people to reach it. It was a great experience overall.
Attended a 5th grade Science School trip for 3 days/2 nights. Great local. Slept in bunk room with one other adult & it was unheated & COLD. Other bunk room was toasty with 20 people in it. A "rustic" experience compared to Collins Lake or Timberline.
Trust your GPS and you will probably end up at the Mazama Lodge. The road is rough and the lodging is basic but the atmosphere can't be beat. Maybe it's just because one of my best friends got married there but I freaking loved it!!
A cozy, members-only lodge in the heart of Government Camp. Although it is members-only, they allow associated groups like Sierra Club and other climbing groups to use the lodge as well. Check the website. Book well in advance as the 3 private rooms go quickly, or grab a bunk in the hostel-style dorms: men's, women's and co-ed bunk rooms with about 20 beds each. Arrive early if you need a lower bunk, as the bunk beds are stacked three high, and if you don't love heights, it could make for an anxious sleeping situation. Bring earplugs if sleeping in the dorms! Other than that, the main hall is comfy and cozy, the meals are delicious the homemade bread is my fave and the fireplaces are very fine to read a book by when you're relaxing after a day in the snow. Summer programs hosted here too, such as hikes. A hidden gem.
Great affordable lodging near Mount Hood. There are hostel-style dorm beds as well as private rooms for only a little extra. The bathrooms are shared, even for private rooms. Make sure to bring a sleeping bag, towel, and shampoo. Tasty cafeteria-style meals are also available. Note that except for special events there is a no-booze policy.
The mazama lodge is a great place to stay when you're visiting Mt Hood. Tucked back into the woods, the access road connects to the timberline ski resort road. To park you drive up to the lodge trail, unload your stuff/friends and then someone drives the car across state road 26 to park. Kinda scary Then you grab your stuff and hike up a short clearly marked path to the lodge. Entering the ought the basement, there are ping pong, foosball, and pool tables. Also, a drying room for any wet ski or hiking gear/clothes as well as a dryer. It takes quarters Upstairs is a lounge area where you'll find the registration desk, restrooms, great views, and a superb dinner. The cooks made really awesome food for both our dinner and breakfast. It's cafeteria/buffet style but the have lots of gluten free and vegan options. The lounge is a great place to hang out or play games. It really makes for a nice time relaxing. Free hot chocolate, coffee, and tea too! Up more stairs and you'll find yourself entering the dorms.make sure to grab a fresh sheet from the stairwell, then find a bed... Probly far from the door so you don't get disturbed by people coming in later. It's kind of like a hostel, unless you rent the private rooms, which are only a few dollars extra. Make sure to bring ear plugs because it can get loud if people are snoring. The coed dorm where we stayed has a balcony with large windows looking out over the forest, a great view to wake up to, and is filled with bunk beds three high. Overall, it's a really fun way to stay near the slopes or great hiking near Mt Hood. It's cheap, the food is good, and the place is clean with lots to do. The only down side is sharing the room, but that can easily be fixed with renting a private room for a few dollars more. Definitely make a trip out and give it a try!
Fairly cheap pricing. It seems to be a place mainly for mountaineers/skiing being a lodge in the snow it has rooms for placing equipment and drying clothes. Bottom line- it is cheap and functional. About.... $20 a person a night? Doing things out there in the mountains takes a lottle more work, and the lodge is much the same. Not the fanciest, but certainly not bad or unbearable. It is run by a single staff member and volunteer work it is surprisingly well maintained. Beds are, perhaps, sub-par and unless you get a private heated room you will be bunking with strangers. Bring your own bedding! mattress sheet provided, for the sake of sanitary reasons Your mattress is suitable to lay on, but it won't keep you warm. Pool and ping-pong table as well as an out-dated tv is provided in the basement recreation room. Second floor is a dining and sitting area with an enormous fireplace/hearth with cocoa and coffee!. Third floor is rooms, including 3? private rooms and shared rooms. The shared rooms are split into Mens, Womens, and a Co-ed room. These shared rooms are literally just filled with beds, no screens or anything to provide privacy. Very spartan. Each of the shared rooms have decks you can go out on. Final comments- sound kinda carries on the top two floors. You can hear other people. It lacks a little in the privacy department. The owner of this lodge could stand to put about $10,000 or $50,000 haha into updating some of their stuff like old tvs, speakers, chairs, and linnens for their beds. Other than that- i was there during Christmas. Plenty of snow ~4 ft to play around in. It was fun, beautiful scenery.
I attended a wedding here, so I didn't have free access to all three floors but this building packs quite a lot of surpassing space. The area is a bit hard to get to, but quite beautiful.
The Mazama Lodge is a wonderful place to relax & unwind in the company of Mazama Mountaineer members an others who love being in and climbing on our beautiful awesome mountains. The private rooms and dorms are quite comfortable, and the Batbrooms are terrific with large showers and lots of very Hot water. The Great Room has a huge fireplace, cozy chairs & sofas along with ample dining tables& chairs. The meals are very good along with fresh baked delights prepared in house by a talented baker. YUM!!. There is a sledding hill out in front of the lodge and many trails can be accessed nearby. In non snow months there is a large Teepee available for overnight stays. All in all The Mazama Lodge is a very unique & terrific place in the Mt. Hood Natioal Forest.
