Mercyhurst's Communication Dept. provides theory and hands-on experience to develop digital communication professionals for a variety of fields.
A Mercyhurst degree in communication is designed to empower you to keep up with this rapidly changing field of journalism, social media, film, public relations, graphic design and more. The field of communication is broad, that’s why Mercyhurst has designed a comprehensive core program with complementary concentrations in strategic communication, new media and visual communication to give you a more specialized education.
You’ll receive a solid foundation in the field through traditional classroom instruction and real-world experiences, such as internships, research projects, campaign and business proposals, documentary/film productions and trade show management. Our faculty members teach from experience; you’ll learn from a former city newspaper editor, design and social media experts and published communication theorists. You’ll also have several opportunities to network with industry professionals and alums through projects and student clubs.

The strategic communication concentration prepares students for a career in public relations, advertising, marketing, event planning, reputation management and other specialized areas in the growing world of communication. Graduates will be prepared to work in a variety of different fields, including corporate, nonprofit, and governmental communication.
The new media concentration is designed to mix journalism, production, and all of the emerging media outlets to prepare students to work in today's converged media environment.
Visual communication students focus on creativity as well as learning the technical and communication skills needed for the design field within professional communication. Working with both print and multimedia outlets, students will be prepared to work in fields relevant to advertising, public relations, marketing, software industry and media.
The Department of Communication seeks to provide a wide-lens, hands-on and whole person approach to communication that will prepare students for an entry-level position in a variety of industries in and relating to the field of communication or to pursue study at the graduate level. To this end we:
• Provide a generalized curriculum in communication while simultaneously providing students the opportunity to narrow their focus within one or more areas of expertise;
• Facilitate a whole-student focus and hands-on approach to learning that helps students develop practical skills as well as ethics, critical thinking abilities and creativity providing the basis for lifelong learning while promoting the dignity of work; and
• Foster a community of learning and influence between students, alumni, faculty, administration and the community.
