Moore House

Description

The Moore House is a historic building located within Colonial National Historical Park, in York County, Virginia. During the American Revolutionary War, it was the site of negotiations for British General Charles Cornwallis's surrender at the Siege of Yorktown.HistoryThe house was erected around 1725 on a 500 acre parcel of land called Temple Farm which also included a dam and grist mill. The land was originally granted to the Crown Governor of Virginia, John Harvey in the 1630s and was known as the York Plantation at this time. Lawrence Smith II later built the Moore House on Temple Farm and the home stayed within the family until 1754 when his son, Robert, sold it to his brother-in-law Augustine Moore to avoid financial woes. Augustine and his family fled to Richmond to avoid the Siege of Yorktown.Siege of YorktownGeneral Cornwallis requested a cease fire on October 17, 1781, and selected the house as the site for surrender negotiations, likely due to its neutral and convenient location. Washington's and Cornwallis's representatives met at the house the following day, where they negotiated Articles of Capitulation. A rough draft was delivered to Washington's headquarters that night, where he made minor changes. The revised articles were agreed to and signed on October 19.

Another historical site on Yorktown battlefield tour. The house looks charming but requires maintenance. Backyard open space with huge trees show years of growth and history. Front fence overlooking York River water. Worth stopping by.
The Moore House is a historic stop on the Yorktown Battlefield motor trail. You can walk up to the house and the Cemetery on the grounds, but you cannot enter the house.
Great place to see if you are into historical places.
Shame on you, National Park Service, for letting this historical place where America basically secured its independence fall into disrepair and neglect. This place is as important, if not more so than Appomattox. No entry allowed. Electrical wires hanging down loosely. Mold and mildrew everywhere. This is a disgrace. Perhaps a tiny fraction of the $80B going to the IRS can be diverted to restore this national treasure.
This is the 5th stop, letter E, on the shorter self-guided car tour for Yorktown National Park. Honestly, it was just okay for me. The history of the house is interesting. But, it would have been really neat to have been able to go inside. When we visited, you were only able to walk around the outside of the house. There were a few informational signs to read. A ten minute stroll around the house was plenty, not much to see or do here.
This is part of the self-guided tour of the Yorktown Battlefield and is on the map that you obtain in the visitor center. The house was closed when we arrived, but the yard was well-maintained and the house itself looked interesting. It would be nice to see inside, and we would definitely stop by again in the futureVisited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNoPrice for adult entryFree

Possible Family relative and still researching geology. Self guided tour. Grounds kept up. House overall good shape but areas around chimneys have bad water damage and need repair. Love the design of the home. Great relation of the location in ending the Revolutionary War. Shame Union soldiers disrespected the home. Worth the visit for many reasons.
This is worth it. Great history and the house is in fantastic shape. I certainly take my hat off to the farmer who allowed his home to be used for this historic surrender and I'm grateful for those who have taken care of this place over the many years so my family and I could step where great leaders once stood.
