Endview Plantation

Description

Endview Plantation is an 18th-century plantation which is located on Virginia State Route 238 in the Lee Hall community in the northwestern area of the independent city of Newport News, Virginia.HistoryEarlier known as the Harwood Plantation, the house was built in 1769 by William Harwood along the Great Warwick Road, which linked the colonial capital of Williamsburg with the town of Hampton on the harbor of Hampton Roads. The 238-year-old house and grounds were used by military forces during the Revolutionary War. General Thomas Nelson, Jr.'s Virginia Militia used it as a resting place on September 28, 1781, en route to Yorktown shortly before the surrender of the British troops under Lord Cornwallis.Military use again came during the American Civil War, when the building was occupied by Dr. Humphrey Harwood Curtis, Jr., one of two doctors in Warwick County, Virginia. Endview was briefly used as a field hospital by the Confederacy during the 1862 Battle of Dam Number One (part of the Peninsula Campaign).

I did not go on the tour but instead took the afternoon to simply walk the grounds and let the history “soak” into my feet. I believe a lot of people go to places and follow a guide around and read a lot of placards without actually getting to know the history of a place. If you don’t do it anywhere else do it here! The cemetery was my favorite part. One of the most eerie and peaceful places I’ve ever been. You can feel the ghosts and bones going back almost 400 years. It was very enjoyable to sit out there in that grove and then to walk the bottomland around it getting a “feel” for what “they” saw and felt, the people that lived there and that have come before. I highly encourage anyone to take a day to walk around the grounds here to really enjoy the history of this place.
It's nice there, they have walking paths and open space. A lot of history there.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo wait
Excellent preservation of such an old place. Larger on the inside than expected. The Nature Trail behind the home is very cool. Enormous trees in the bottomland around the property. Some of the largest tree selected specimens I've EVER seen. Tulip Poplars over 100 feet tall and 30 feet in circumference. Blown away. The presentation was solid, and the young man executing the tour is incredibly well-informed. Great work!
I liked their hiking trails the best because they had gentle hills that you could walk on instead of all flat grounds.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNot surePrice for adult entryFree

Great historical place! We really enjoyed our visit and the Civil War Reenactment that was going on while we were there.
Endview was the site for Colonial Virginia Council's Scouting 30th anniversary. The site was well prepared for the event and a great venue for camping and other outdoor scouting activities.Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNot sure
