PFS Roxy Theater

About

Beginning in 2013, the historic Roxy Theater became the new home of the Philadelphia Film Society (PFS), and is located at 2023 Sansom Street.

Description

PFS operates the Roxy as a first-run theater, with an emphasis on independent films, many of which presently cannot be seen theatrically in Philadelphia. The PFS Roxy Theater programs an array of highly anticipated new films along with repertory cinema not widely available in the city. In addition, the PFS Roxy offers educational programs focused on film and filmmakers, designed for students of any age.

The PFS Roxy Theater has undergone major renovations. The building required significant structural repair which afforded the opportunity to make changes to create the best possible movie going experience in the space. The first round of renovations consisted of adding new seating, new floors, new digital projection in both theaters and an additional 35MM reel to reel projection system in one theater, new screens, and a new sound system, and washrooms. We are very pleased to also have made the Roxy ADA accessible.

Sound and picture quality were top notch. If your looking for an old town movie experience this is the right place, friendly staff and a very clean environment. If your looking for comfort this may not be the place. The seats do not recline and the arm rest are wooden. Plenty of space but uncomfortable. The concession are prepackaged bag popcorn, candy and beverages. Great intercity location.
Love the theater. Has an "old school" vibe. Small theaters 6 seats across in the whole theater I was in. Screen was smaller than your average AMC but the picture quality is awesome and the sound is top notch. Amenities aren't anything crazy but has small bags of popcorn and water, soda bottles. Seats are not the most comfortable. I come here to avoid crowds. It's perfect for solo movie trips. Tickets are a little pricey though but since it's independent I don't have too much of a problem.
A small theater in a great location that shows first-run movies. It has two small screens which look good but are a bit small. Both theaters are clean and were renovated a few years ago. Concessions are a little limited and they only serve Pepsi products. The staff is always very friendly.
A theater for film lovers. A lot of work must have gone into transforming that space into a functioning cinema. Staff was great and the seats were comfortable, especially since the movie my friends and I saw was a bit on the long side. Will definitely be back. My next trip will likely include concessions.
This two-screen theater is very "mom and pop" feeling, which gives it a certain charm. The screens are not large, but the projection and sound are very good. The seating is about as upright as it comes, with no recline to the chairs at all... my only real complaint.
I love this little place. My favorite part is that it is local and they're not out to make profit. Great prices compared to the big - box theaters. My only complaint is that the seating is very tight. The screen is a little high when you sit close to the front, but you forget about it once the movie starts. $2 discount if you buy a yearly "membership," but you'll have to go 18 times for that to pay off. And I will
They show great movies, has a lot of charm, and they do cool events. Sadly, it lacks a lot of the amenities of even second rate movie theaters. They have just 3 co-ed bathroom stalls, which means waiting to use the bathroom can take longer than you'd like when you can't help but take a break during the movie theater, which features your smaller than average screen. I recommend giving this theater a go if you don't need the amenities. If you don't need snacks or bathroom breaks or big screens, this theater is perfect. If you're spoiled, like I am, maybe only go here once in a while for the cool events and hard to find movies.
Despite its small size, it has perfect picture and sound quality and wonderful seats in it's rooms, along with a smooth, cozy, vibrant atmosphere and experience. It also has nice, experienced employees and nice, tidy restrooms.
I adore this theater! Wednesday night showings after 7pm are BYO for 21+ beer and wine only, $3 convenience charge, which is quite a treat. They always have great movies and the theater is small so no matter where you sit, you can see the screen without hurting your neck. I would highly suggest this over any other theater, unless you're specifically looking for an IMAX experience.
This is a cozy tiny theater. The staff is very nice and they have popcorn and bottled drinks for sale. The screen is smaller than the larger theaters in the city, but you don't notice once the movie has started.
