Pinery Provincial Park

About

Pinery Provincial Park, Grand Bend ON, on the shores of Lake Huron. Open year round for camping and day use. Great biking, hiking, canoeing and skiing.

Description

Here on Lake Huron, vast waves of sand dunes roll back from the shore to meet groups of towering oaks, the largest oak savanna woodlands remaining in North America. These ancient trees preside over a mosaic of prairie grasses, wildflowers and shrubs. Sun-drenched meadows teem with rare and unique butterflies, songbirds and reptiles. Go softly here along boardwalks and bicycle trails and endless sand beaches. Come, too, in winter to camp, stay overnight in a yurt, toboggan and ski on groomed trails.

Pinery has a total of 1000 campsites in three campgrounds, 404 of which offer electrical hookups.

Riverside Campground is located beside the picturesque Ausable River, and has electrical and pull-through sites. Besides being the largest campground, Riverside is also open year round.

Burley Campground open from May to September, is the farthest away from the main gate, but is well worth the extra drive! These smaller, more secluded sites are nestled between older pines and within close walking distance to the beach. These campsites are perfect for those campers that don't need electricity or pull-through site capabilities.

Dunes Campground is within easy walking distance to the beach, outdoor amphitheater and Visitor Centre. Dunes campground provides a mix of electrical, pop-up trailer and tenting sites from May to September.

Twelve furnished campsites have just been located in Area 1 of Riverside campground. Each site includes an 8 sided tent-like structure called a "Yurt" that is attached to a wheelchair accessible platform. Each "Yurt" includes bunks for sleeping 6 people, table and chairs, electric lighting and a heater for cool weather camping. In addition, a gas barbecue and picnic shelter is supplied with each facility.

Group Camping
There are three group camping areas, with a total of ten sites that accommodate up to 35 people. Water taps and vault toilets are on site. The sites are located near the beaches, though transportation is required to reach comfort stations.

Winter Activities

Pinery offers a full range of activities during the winter months. Visitors can camp on electrically serviced sites, ski on the 38 kilometres of cross-country trails or walk along one of the trails. In the centre of the park there is a heated chalet and toboggan hill.

Cross Country Skiing
38 kilometres of trails form a series of loops, providing a variety of challenges for the beginner and advance skier alike. Trail maps can be picked up at the main gate, trail entrances and the Visitor Centre. Cross-country skis and snowshoe equipment rentals are available through the Visitor Centre on Saturday and Sunday from 10-4. A volunteer Ski Patrol is often found along the trail to assist skiers

Beautiful park. Great for first time campers and family’s with small children! They have kayak, canoe, and bike rentals, a well-stocked park store with groceries, a small restaurant for something quick to eat, and a cute ice-cream shop. They also have activities and programs for kids check their calendar and amazing trails. The beach is amazing but there are a lot of rocks on the shore so water shoes are very helpful. The dunes beach accessed only if you’re camping there is beautiful but the parking gets full QUICK and is a great spot for the sunset. The day/use beaches P1-9 are great but the further you go, the harder the trek is to the beach from the parking. The easiest accessible lot non-dog beach is P3&P4. The bathrooms and showers are cleaned between 2pm and 3pm everyday, and the park staff are very friendly!
Went there for camping for 2 nights this summer. Some campgrounds are so small. And the washrooms near by the camping area doesn't flush very well and smells around the faucet. The electrical washrooms, however are good. The beach is so good to have fun. Loved the waves. Definitely will visit it again
Traveled with family, including a toddler. Highly recommend booking Dunes campground, as it's closest to the beach. Facilities were in good shape. There's a store available if you need supplies and a restaurant for a meal. The park is larger than it looks on a map. Bringing your bike certainly helps get around, there are lots of trails available. Will definitely return.
Came to the Park for the beach. I reserved online in advance for the day use. The beach is a mix of pebbles and sand. The water is clear and I didn't see much algae. To access the beach, once you parked, there is a path over the dunes from the parking to the beach. There is a hand and foot washing station near the parking as well as washrooms and picnic benches under a shelter. There are more washrooms near the beach as well. The beach was not crowded. Advisable to wear water shoes makes it easier to walk on the pebbles. The water was calm during the day but the waves got heavier towards the evening. It's fun driving in the park the road is paved and surrounded with trees. There is a store in the park. Rental for bike and canoe.
I have never camped at the Pinery but I want to! The dog beaches are great for dogs , one of the only beaches around that allow dogs. Nice mix of smooth rocks and sand. Further along the day use beaches 3 and 4 offer a beautiful beach that's a close walk from the car....5 onward you will be walking a little through the dunes. Beautiful walk, don't venture into the dunes however they are a protected, vulnerable habitat. Stay on the path. Nice sunsets. World class. Clean. Bathrooms and secure garbage receptacles.
One of our favourite spots to camp. - Spacious sites, some more private than others, many walking distance to the beach - Bathrooms/showers were cleaned regularly. - Store has all supplies you may need or forgot to bring. There is an ice cream shop as well. - Bicycle/canoe rentals available. - Beach is incredible, the sunsets are spectacular. Parking can get packed-go early. For a change of pace, the main strip in Grand Bend is less than 15 minutes away. Lovely beach town with cool shops, ice cream shops and bars/restaurants. Our favourites ~ The Tipsy Pelican and The Growling Gator views of the beach. For those with kids there is a great playground and splash pad, my granddaughter had a blast. They also offer free beach wheelchair rentals with a special walkway down the sand! We booked two more campsites for August.
Best place to hang out with friends or family for BBQ and sunsets, lots of parking space. Have to almost drive from the main road into the park about 15 minutes, Please grab the map at the gate to avoid confusion. Staff is very friendly at the gate. After getting parking pass for daily users, drive in and park at our convenience. Washrooms are clean and sinks are provided outside the washrooms with toilet paper and soap. One of my favorite places to go every summer
I love this park! Lots of nice trails and the beach is beautiful. The staff is super helpful and friendly. You can rent canoes and kayaks as well as bikes to go trail riding. I advise to book a campsite online and do this early so you can be sure to get a good spot. Lots of bathrooms and they even have showers at some of them too. Be sure to get a park map so you can find where all the amenities are throughout the park. Amazing views, a beautiful place to spend during summer.
Beautiful park. Well kept, and the bathrooms and showers were also clean. The dog beaches are great. Would love to see some improvements in the trailer dump sites. There are only 2 dump sites for the whole park and only 1 RV can dump at a time, causing big line ups. We had to wait 1 hr to dump before leaving the park. Additional dump sites, or multiple dump spots on each dump site would greatly minimize any line ups, and allow guests to leave in a timely manner. All in all, a great place for camping. I will be visiting again in the future.
The Dunes at Pinery is a pleasant place to tent camp. Soft sand and adequate privacy in some sites from fellow campers. There are more bathrooms with showers than the park map discloses. The motion detection showers are generous. There are Lyme carrying ticks in the park. The signage could be improved ~ many boards are blank and signage to exit the park were non-existent.
