Originally over 500 acres Pontiac State Hospital was first enacted into law in 1873. Construction began in February of 1875 and was official opened in August 1878 with a patient population of 222, 121 males and 101 females.

Construction began in February of 1875 and was official opened in August 1878 with a patient population of 222, 121 males and 101 females. The hospital was designed by Architect E. E. Myers of Detroit and built in the Kirkbride style. The first superintendent was Henry M. Hurd, he served from 1878 to 1889. The cost of the grounds and buildings at opening where valued at over $467,000, that's 10 Million in 2012 dollars.
