FYI WakeMed is on the right when you pull in, the UNC is the building on the left there’s no UNC sign on the building. Brought my son here to be seen as his PCP is in the UNC network. Pros: 1 We were seen quickly we were also the only ones in the office at the time. 2 You can check wait times online. 3 the nurse Tammy and doctor Dr. Derse were very friendly. 4 the waiting room and patient rooms were clean Cons: 1 The receptionist was wearing gloves the whole time while handling our intake and paperwork, usually people wear gloves and don’t clean their hands. 2 You have to fill out 4 pages of paperwork, even if already established as a UNC patient. 3 The office apparently closes from 2-2:30 for a break, that’s not indicated on their website.
BEWARE: the hours are posted incorrectly. They close at 7:30. I made the mistake of driving here only to have two people tell me to go to Wake Med from behind locked doors. Fortunately, Wake Med is the building next door to this one. You don’t even need to get into your car. Literally walk from one building to the next. Wake Med takes people right up until 8pm, as long as you are inside by 8. First time there and Wake Med was great!
I'm giving 2 stars so that I can at least shout-out the great staff. I'm pretty sure he was MD, possibly PA, but for the sake of this review, I was seen by Dr. Michael Ryder. He was awesome. I wish I remembered the nurse's name because she was seriously amazing...we need more nurses and Dr's like them! My issue is with the UNC Health billing. I have asthma and came in knowing exactly what I needed - a breathing treatment. For the visit, I was charged $399.00 plus the treatment for $67.00. Naturally, I have a high deductible so for this singular visit/breathing treatment, I paid $364 out of pocket. I've never paid more than $50 out of pocket at any urgent care ever, not even for the very same treatment. Actually, I've never been charged that much for any Dr or specialist visit literally ever. I think FOUR HUNDRED DOLLARS is a little steep. I called to dispute it and that wasn't going to get me anywhere. The billing person I spoke with said this charge was based on that I was a first-time patient. That's all I'll ever be because there's no way I'm going back there just to be surprised with another unexpected & over-charged bill. I'd sit in a waiting room, unable to breathe for hours, to be seen by an equally skilled staff rather than be out $400 unnecessarily.
Absolutely horrible and painful experience! The only reason I gave this place 1 star is because the nurse was very kind and thorough. However, Dr. Derse was unnecessarily rough and could care less about the pain he was causing to someone who was already in pain. I would not recommend this facility or doctor at all. Please go somewhere else where you will be better cared for.
My recent experience with UNC Urgent Care at Cary could not have been better! The front desk receptionist was both pleasant and efficient. My wait for a cut and bleeding index finger was given good priority, and I was seen within about 15 minutes by nurse Jeanne and PA Caitlin who were both most personable and talented - who put me at ease quickly - and who made me feel like family. I am looking forward to re-visiting the staff in a few days to have my stitches removed.
Horrible experience here, after having bad sinus drainage and all kinds of colors showing infection they simply told me l had something viral and there was nothing else l should do But rest. My regular Dr would have told me to take mucinex, Flonase and Zyrtec at least something to help fight it off. I called back 3 days later to state my cough had gotten worse and more mucus discharge and they simply told me l could come back to see the Dr again...why would l l asked the employee on the phone? It's simply a strategy NOT to help someone the first time. No thank you to another revisit here!
The doctor came in to check on my son then just left without any comments except that the nurse will be in to do a swab for Covid test. The nurse then came after, did the swab, gave us written instructions and a bit of an attitude. When we got home I tried to create an account on UNC my chart and it said it will be 3-5 days to allow access. I called back and left 2 messages and no one called back. Definitely would not go back there again.
Everyone I met from the front desk to the nurse oops didn’t get their names! to Naomi the Nurse Practitioner was AWESOME!! Scheduled my time online and didn’t really wait that long when I arrived. Would absolutely go back. Wish they did primary care!!
The nurses were very friendly and entertaining. I came in with a joint injury that had just occurred but no one offered me any ice or crutches tho I did get a wheelchair with no feet props. A cursory exam by a NP Ms. Walker, was ok and X-rays were good but I never even saw the Dr. O'Rourke. Not sure Id go back.
I had an awful experience with a verbally abusive physician assistant named Brittany Smithmyer. Sadly, as a patient there is basically nothing you can do. You’re at the mercy of whoever is there at that day/time. She didn’t even discharge me, after seeing me. She said, “You probably have a virus.” Then she just left the room and she and nobody else ever returned. She should lose her job. That’s not how you treat people.
