Preserving the H.H. Richardson buildings, creating an Architecture and Visitor Center and reviving the Olmsted landscape of the original Buffalo State Asylum for the Insane is so much more than just saving an historic landmark.
Rehabilitation of the Richardson is the mission of the Richardson Center Corporation, a not for profit 501(c)(3) organization. The Board’s vision statement informs the rehabilitation process. The Richardson Architecture Center board, also a not for profit 501(c)(3), oversees the development of the Architecture and Visitor Center.
We envision the rehabilitation of the National Historic Landmark Richardson Olmsted Campus (the former Buffalo State Asylum for the Insane), comprised of the H.H. Richardson-designed buildings and Frederick Law Olmsted-designed grounds, to be the crowning jewel of a mixed-use, multi-purpose civic campus of public and private activities.
"The Richardson Center Corporation is charged with overseeing the redevelopment and re-activation of the former Buffalo State Asylum for the Insane - now known as the Richardson Olmsted Campus. The grounds are a National Register of Historic Places-listed and National Historic Landmark-designated.In 1870, construction began using a design based on the mental health principles of Thomas Story Kirkbride and his ‘Kirkbride Plan.’ The buildings were designed by notable architect H.H. Richardson and esteemed landscaping team of Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux. The historic Olmsted-Vaux South Lawn is open to the public. In addition, the Richardson Hotel is open for guests who want to enjoy a stay in an historic setting."
