Richardson Olmsted Campus

About

OFFICIAL Facebook page for The Richardson Olmsted Campus - a National Historic Landmark. Managed by the Richardson Center Corporation.

Description

Preserving the H.H. Richardson buildings, creating an Architecture and Visitor Center and reviving the Olmsted landscape of the original Buffalo State Asylum for the Insane is so much more than just saving an historic landmark.

Rehabilitation of the Richardson is the mission of the Richardson Center Corporation, a not for profit 501(c)(3) organization. The Board’s vision statement informs the rehabilitation process. The Richardson Architecture Center board, also a not for profit 501(c)(3), oversees the development of the Architecture and Visitor Center.

Mission

We envision the rehabilitation of the National Historic Landmark Richardson Olmsted Campus (the former Buffalo State Asylum for the Insane), comprised of the H.H. Richardson-designed buildings and Frederick Law Olmsted-designed grounds, to be the crowning jewel of a mixed-use, multi-purpose civic campus of public and private activities.

"The Richardson Center Corporation is charged with overseeing the redevelopment and re-activation of the former Buffalo State Asylum for the Insane - now known as the Richardson Olmsted Campus. The grounds are a National Register of Historic Places-listed and National Historic Landmark-designated.In 1870, construction began using a design based on the mental health principles of Thomas Story Kirkbride and his ‘Kirkbride Plan.’ The buildings were designed by notable architect H.H. Richardson and esteemed landscaping team of Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux. The historic Olmsted-Vaux South Lawn is open to the public. In addition, the Richardson Hotel is open for guests who want to enjoy a stay in an historic setting."

Absolutely gorgeous historical location and hotel. My pictures don’t do justice, but much of the inside is still the same, and you can feel the eeriness the whole time you’re there. I’d come here just to walk around even without a reservation, which was surprisingly affordable. Overall, very haunting yet beautiful.
I love that this place exists. I know little about its history and future uses outside of being a community focused gathering space and boutique hotel but walking the grounds at sundown made for a truly awesome experience to photograph the structure. Magnificent in scale and fascinating to see half rehabbed. I almost wish they would lean into the spoke a bit more :P Nonetheless this is an impressive building and wrapped in manicured grounds to match its grandeur. I hope it activates the area and draws people to the city. Truly a unique thing and a must see in you visit to Buffalo. Very cool. Very cool indeed
I did a private tour of the Richardson Olmstead complex in November. It was only the tour guide and I, and it was INCREDIBLE! It is directed to show more of the positive features and history of the complex. If you choose to take a tour, wear comfortable sneakers as you do a lot of walking and climbing stairs. I highly recommend if anyone would like to hear what really went on.
This place is beautiful. Visiting from California I’m blown away by the details on the buildings here. The hotel inside looks cool. You can actually go inside and walk all around.
Historical landmark, renovation is beautiful. Had brunch, delicious food.
Lots of green grass and amazing architecture
With the Hotel Henry currently closed, there's no access to the interior of the Richardson complex, but the building and restored park are still amazing. The park is getting a bit overgrown, and that detracts from the overall experience, as it makes the are look a bit rundown.Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNoPrice for adult entryFree
I visited this place and got chased by a chainsaw wielding cannibalistic man who kept calling me “meat” and then proceeded to throw me into a fire oven. Luckily I escaped! Scary but exciting experience. Will come back soon to experience the groom
We have never gone inside but the building is beautiful and the grounds are well kept so my kids just love running around by "the castle"Visited onWeekend
