Located on Oregon's new High Desert Discovery Scenic Byways system, right on the Steens Tour Route, just 3 miles east of Frenchglen.

"We welcome you to share in the peace and solitude of this remote, wide open space in this rural area. Relax by a flickering campfire; in the quietness of this area you can listen to a pack of young coyotes learning to call or the whirl of the nighthawk as it hunts its prey. Open year around, we have Lodging, Full Service RV Sites and Tent Sites, with clean restrooms. Come fish the Donner und Blitzen River for native trout. Open to group functions! A very popular destination for bird watchers and astronomy clubs. We are known for one of the darkest skies in the U.S."

We stayed at this wonderful place in July for our anniversary. We stayed in Cabin 8. It was the perfect place. Very clean, quiet and beautiful! The owners are very nice and accommodating. The cabin itself was nicely remodeled and extremely comfortable. If you’re looking for a place to stay to visit the Steens Mountains area we would highly recommend it! Pictures from the room.
Nice place, clean. The 3 is for the negative unwelcoming attitude of the staff. I'm sure people have been rude and destructive but should all the guests have to pay for that? Don't experience this at other parks. There were countless rules, not only written, as well as signs everywhere, and spoken. Signs with caps, underlining, and bold print. Don't, don't, don't... Had to set up with sprinklers spraying me and my rig. Keeping the grass green more important than the customer?? Didn't dare ask them to turn them off due to all the negativity. All in all Didn't feel welcome and wasn't comfortable, so didn't stay long just overnight and left 1st thing in the morning.
I've been coming to Steens Mountain Wilderness Resort for the last 10 years. The improvements the owners have made during this 10 years has been impressive on all accounts. They have rebuilt the office, showers, laundry room, and store area. The work they have conducted on the camp sites during this time has also been a major upgrade from 10 years ago. The amazing thing is they have done all of the work themselves. It is hard to find a campground with full hookups in this part of Harney County. I have found them to be extremely accommodating and helpful when I have needed something. Their cabins are also extremely clean and comfortable. If you want to spend any time exploring in the Steens Mountains or fishing in the Donner or Blitzen Rivers, this Resort is a great jumping off place to do that.
We didn't expect a lot! The term Resort is misleading lol. We have a travel trailer. The well water is great. Single sewer connection and 30 amps electricity. We simply came for the steen mountains and vista's. The gal that checked us in can have a bit of an attitude, but so can I. Check-in store has just the essential. Ice, drinks, goodies like that. The mercantile in town has gas and diesel. All in all, I gave it 4 out of 5.
The bathroom and shower is very clean and bright! Located at the bottom of mountain. Very easy access to the road up to Steens Sorry I forgot to take photos
This is a desert "resort" so it has a wild setting. Dry wild grass and sagebrush. Full hookup pull- through RV slots plus small cabins. The owners are very nice. The location is perfect for what we wanted to do - Alvord Desert, Steens Mountain Wilderness loop, Diamond Craters, and French Round Barn. Plus Frenchglen itself is an experience. You can get ⁶regular gas and diesel here, but the grocery selection is limited so bring the food you are going to need.
Website was a little deceiving and we were disappointed that our adjacent sites were terraced up the hillside, making getting from one to another tricky. Sites are small between but very long—a little too long. Whoever planned the electric and sewer connections didn’t do a very good job because it was uphill and at the very end of the site. Was basically unusable, so we dumped at the dump station instead. Only a few sites had any grass. Don’t forget to bring mosquito spray because you’re gonna need it. Was close to Frenchglen, Steens Mountain and Malheur Wildlife Refuge, but the 3 miles of gravel road to the park in our RV was no fun
Contrary to what a couple of silly reviews claim, this is indeed a resort. One must remember this is in the middle of nowhere and is not a Club Med in Fort Lauderdale. Cabin 6 was just fine, the rate was reasonable, the owners have done a great job with the place, the night skies were "stellar" LOL, Steens Mountain and Alvord Desert are magnificent, and we had space, privacy, and a square deal that bested all other options in the Frenchglen area. Careful research pointed us here and it was the right choice. A+
A+++++! This place is incredible! If you're coming to the Steens, you must stay at this place! We stayed in one of the cabins that was perfectly set up for our needs. They have hot water, coffee pot, kitchen, comfortable beds, and decks with gorgeous views! We didn't want to leave. Some of the reviews on here complaining about wifi and mosquitos are a bit silly - we relish the time getting out of the city and enjoying the rural Oregon wilderness. We can't wait to come back!!!! Thank you Mark and Debbie for being gracious hosts and providing such clean and nice accommodations way out here!
This place just didn't gel with us. I look at the picture on their website and the "resort" just didn't match what we saw. We love camping in the boonies, especially the high desert, but the area did not appeal to us. Friendly help from the gentleman who checked us in, laundry and restrooms were clean. Only the end spots in each site lane has grass. With all the 5 star reviews this place obviously appeals to many.
