The mission of the Office of Lesbian, Bisexual, Gay, and Transgender Student Services is to ensure equitable access for all at Western Michigan University and promote a campus climate that affirms and supports the academic and personal development of all students inclusive of their sexual orientation, gender identity and gender expression.
The Office of LBGT Student Services will be engaging in frequent posts in hopes of building community and facilitating open dialogue. Be sure to check out what we post and join in on the discussion. We seek to encourage meaningful and constructive conversations as a way to grow our collective understandings. The Office of LBGT Student Services will exercise our right to moderate conversations in order to support an environment of respect. We value diversity of thought including constructive disagreement, but will not tolerate abusive or disrespectful comments. Constructive conversations regarding the information provided are encouraged in order to support a learner centered, discovery driven and globally engaged community.
We welcome your input and conversation as we learn together how to mediate meaningful and constructive discourse. Please refer to the following guidelines regarding conduct and posts in order to better understand our hopes for creating a respectful forum:
Keep your posts on topic
Include explanations of materials linking to other websites
Be courteous of other users
Use inclusive language
Use accurate identity descriptors (lesbian, not lezzie; gay, not homo; trans* or transgender, not t****y).
Use personal statements (I believe that … OR In my experience …) instead of speaking for an entire community when expressing opinions
Don’t post offensive, hateful, harassing, or profane material.
Don’t post spam
Don’t post personal attacks
Don’t post personal information (yours or anyone else’s)
Don’t post as if you are someone else
Don’t post anything that could be interpreted as hate speech
Don’t use derogatory epithets to describe identities
Don’t post anything that could cause someone to feel shamed, ridiculed, held in contempt, or lowered in the estimation of the larger community
