Description

Road transportation of people and communities has and always will be an integral part of any country's working and social life. As is the case with other global communities, the South African experience has been no different. From the onset, the Tram cars in the early mining days of our country to the luxury buses in use today, the mobility of people remains the core ingredient for any dynamic society. The Company was established in 1879.

Motor buses and trams ran together in Port Elizabeth but with the introduction of the Leyland Tital TDI bus in 1928, patrons of the trams became lesser and lesser, and in early 1939 the usage of trams was abolished. The fleet compliment in 1939 was 41 trackless trams, 48 diesel buses and 7 petrol engine buses. The second world was had its negative impact on the Port Elizabeth Tramway Company.

In 1954 the service to New Brighton which was rendered by the South African Railways was taken over by the Company and a new subsidiary, known as Bay Passenger Transport Limited, was formed and for the first time employing drivers and conductors from the disadvantaged groups.

In 1955 a new depot was built in New Brighton and 34 new buses were bought at 186 500 pounds totalling a fleet of 78 buses serving the New Brighton - City Routes with a six-minute frequency throughout the day increasing to one bus a minute during peak times. At the same time, a new depot was built in Perl Road, to serve the now Northern areas and Walmer. A total of 36 buses were used to run the service and 116 employees were employed from these areas.

In May 1957 Valeydan's Bus Service was acquired with 14 buses operating in Veeplaas and Mission areas. The fleet of petrol-engine buses were replaced by diesel buses. In December 1990, the end of public transport associated with the Cape Town Group, Tollgate Holdings had come when the latter decided to withdraw from Port Elizabeth. The decision that had to be taken by Port Elizabeth was if they required a bus service. An overwhelmingly positive response led to Commerce and Industry, Financial Institutions and local Authorities creating the necessary backup and Algoa Bus Company started operating on January 1, 1991.

Today the company employs more than 700 people, of which 89% are from previously disadvantaged groups, with approximately 400 buses to serve the communities of Port Elizabeth, Despatch and Uitenhage. The holding company, E'Zethu, operates as a Section 21 company, meaning any profit made could be invested back into Algoa Bus Company (PTY) Ltd, its employees and therefore indirectly the community.

Always on time and reliable. Thanks for the service Algoa Bus Company . I can't forget to mention the bus drivers are friendly and helpful.
Your drivers act like they are driving minibus taxis. No feedback from complaints
What is the point of having someone responding to time table and route queries when the responsible person can't give proper information. Also why does Algoa bus service have busses travelling on outskirts of suburbs /townships when passengers are living in the township/suburb? Why would the route planner prefer busses to travel via main routes , eg Uitehage road to Veeplaas, whilst it passed Young Park,,Algoa Park, Ferguson etcwhere there are no houses, factories or business whilst the best route would be through the suburb main road. Seemingly Algoa Bus Company HRD does not value the safety of their demployees and passengers. The App also doesn't work most of time .
Not reliable with times but hopefully it will improve...
Very much unreliable in terms of the scheduled times of the busses. I usually board the bus at Overbaakens to Summerstrand in the mornings but I somehow do not even know when the bus arrives at my stop anymore because it arrives anytime between 6:30 to 7:15. This means that I sometimes have to wait in the stop for a while 45 minutes waiting for the bus. It's very frustrating, unreliable and unprofessional. Hoping for an improved service
What is the point of having a query form on the website if no-one responds ? I've filled the form in numerous times yet nothing.
The busses in Old Grahamstown road drive very reckless. The drive on the sidewalk to pick up passengers and can at anytime strike a pedestrian walking next to the road. Especially after 16h00 All cars have to que..why cant the busses to?
Called them about my child stolen card, they said they were to call me back but no one called back.
This experience is always the most horrible experience as the bus drivers are rude the busses are mostly late. The attitude is the hardest park as they really don’t care about the passengers most of really take busses because we don’t have a choice. The customer services is none existing but as poor people we really don’t have a choice but to take them. Please sort out your staff members as this is really getting out of hand. We pay to ride the bus but to deal with horrible attitudes as well is really not going to work for most of us.
These drivers are not professional yes you have a job and your job is pick people up and be a convenience for them but if you're going to block my driveway and inconvenience me and then still try to ride into me that is wrong and I hope algoa bus can do something of this
